301 Redirect for IIS

    I am changing a set of pages in my root from .html to .asp extension.
    My question:
    Should I leave the content of the .html version on each page or delete it with a 301 redirection to the new .asp page? Right now they are both sitting on the server and I'm trying to prevent any duplicate content issues.

    Also , Is this the correct way to apply a 301 redirect to each individual page in my root on an IIS server (see below)? And how long should I leave the old .html version up?

    IIS Redirect
    * In internet services manager, right click on the file or folder you wish to redirect
    * Select the radio titled "a redirection to a URL".
    * Enter the redirection page
    * Check "The exact url entered above" and the "A permanent redirection for this resource"
    * Click on 'Apply'

    Thanks
