301 or 410?

    Had a duplicate content problem.
Want to just flush some of the pages on a domain out of the index.
Not worried at ALL about users going to the links and seeing a dead page, noone was linking to them anyways (only links to those pages were internal).

301 to the homepage or a 410 is the question?

What is best for google, and this situation?

I would use 301 redirects, just to keep PR

    Hi,

301 is understood by all search engines. It works fine.

410 is rarely used. The probability is high that it does not produce the expected result. I would not use it.
