30 Minutes with Vista...

I got a new Desktop PC today, at around 9:20 am to be exact(ish). It came with Vista Home Basic, which I was looking forward to playing around with.

The first 25 minutes were fine, bit slow but quite pretty. I tried to pop a dvd on while I was setting up the pc, Vista froze, the screen went black. I waited for about 10 minutes the reset my pc.

Upon boot, the pre-checks would run, then black screen, the boot and on and on. I tried last good config, then safe mode several times. Same, I even inserted the Vista cd and was just given a command prompt.

What a bag of crap, is that the best they can do in terms of stabilty? 25 minutes then dead? I've switched back to XP and to be quite honest i think i'll format the Vista hard drive, I dont want to grant access every time I run an app, I dont want to have to launch nearly everything via the right click menu for compatabilty

    not good.

We have 2 pcs... 1 with ultimate and 1 with home premium. No problems with either since we got them. In fact, I prefer it over XP.

I guess it depends what you want from an OS, ignoring the fact mine crashed for good after 30m mins. I just want something to hold everything together and run what I need as fast as possible.

You need a pretty good PC to get a hardware score of six or seven from vista, and at the end of the day it doesnt do much to improve upon the factors i'd rate it on.

And the security messages are down to the 'User Account Control' or UAC which can easily be disabled - click here for link.

I find all the little things very useful like the search bar in start menu and the breadcrumb folder links etc.

Thanks. I'd like vista to change my mind and show me that it is worthwhile. I can remember everyones reaction when XP came out, 'OMG it needs 256mb to run!' :) lol!

Well, I have a license so I guess I can download an evaluation copy and re-enter my serial. I do have two hard drives as well, one of which is split into 3 waiting for me to get round to installing Ubuntu 7.

I got Vista and tried it out only to discover that it doesn't seem to like it when you try and run Firefox. It won't even load. The Firefox forums are full of angry users complaining about Vista. Nice going Microsoft. I went back to XP a day later.
