I have been in affiliate marketing for 2 years now and what I learned is that although creating relevant traffic to your website is challenging task for every marketer, creating content that converts might be the real struggle.

Although I know there is still a lot of things in which I have to improve I think there are few small "tricks" I have already learned that might be useful for some DP members as well. So here are my 3 tips you should keep in mind when creating affiliate content.

    1. Link your product inside your content. Your visitors paying attention to your content not to your banners. Placing link text to your articles might be a real boost to your CTR.

    2. Track your links. Seeing the performance of your links is crucial for your success and might teach you something about the behavior of your visitors. This information might be used in your further affiliate articles. If you are using wordpress and wondering whether there is a free affiliate link tracking plugin then my answer is yes. You can try Pretty Link Lite plugin.

    3. Make your product images within your articles clickable affiliate links. This is very simple trick which might increase your CTR nicely.

This was my small contribution to DP forum, it would be great to hear about your experience and best practice in creating affiliate content that convert.

Good advice there. What I've found very important thing is the text readability. If your article looks bad at the first sight, chances are the visitor won't read it. Thus there are some things to keep in mind about the article typography:
    • Keep paragraphs short. Keeping paragraphs at around 5 lines also helps to keep the text readable. For some reason, big chunks of text don't attract the human eye.
    • Use big enough line height. If the lines of text are too close to each other it looks unprofessional and is hard to read. Better to have some spacing there. In CSS you can easily adjust this with line-height attribute.
    • Have your lines of text short. Around 15 words per line is what has been working for me. It also looks clean. If the line is too long, it's also harder to read. The visitor might lose interest because of this. With the CSS attribute width you can set width for the element containing the text.
    • Font size should be spot on. Well, it's hard to tell exactly what is spot on font size. To my eye, small text doesn't look good. I use around 16px font size on my articles. There's also an article about this here: http://www.smashingmagazine.com/2011/10/07/16-pixels-body-copy-anything-less-costly-mistake/
    • Put an image and perhaps a quick facts table to the article if you can so it's not just text. Eyes like to see something else than text now and then.
    • Visitors most probably like short and simple sentences. Short sentences are easy to read. Also, visitors might not be able to follow your complex train of thought if you use long sentences. Actually this is what I sometimes notice after proofreading the article prior publishing. I wrote an article that I thought was clear and to the point. But proofreading reveals some nasty hard to understand sentences that leave the visitor like WTF. I cut them, put period there and use simple words. Problem solved.
There is a common thread to all this. It's simplicity. It might be not the case for offline papers, but in online texts simpler is usually better. If your readers like your typography, they'll be more likely to finish your article. And click the links in it as dieorfly above suggested. So keep your typography clean, simple and professional! Makes sense, huh?

PS. There's actually a tool to get quite ideal typography. It's called golden ratio typography calculator, can be found here: http://www.pearsonified.com/typography/. It tells you good line height, font size and paragraph width after you've input one or more attributes. Quite handy tool.

Thank you for the tips. We always look outside our sites for links, forgetting the importance of internal links.
