My msn account was hacked at the weekend, this also gave the hacker access to several accounts, one of which was my DP account!

I mailed DP THREE TIMES to tell them that my account had been compromised and that I no longer had access, I received NO REPLY!!

Not one, not a dickiebird, I lost access to my account and yet DP decided to ignore my emails, even though I told them info that could only have been given by me, even though the email address I asked them to contact me on was at one of the urls in my signature, and I recieved NO REPLY!

How disgusting is that? Surely, if someone is able to verify that they are who they say they are, and they are saying that someone has managed to gain unauthorised access to their account and lock them out, surely DP would do something?

Obviously not, I have finally regained control of my MSN account today, and therefore been able to gain access to my DP account, hence this post

    Laz

P.S. If anybody was scammed by the hacker, and he did try to scam those people on my msn contact list, then I'm sorry but as I had no access I couldnt really do fuck all about it.. (do a chargeback)

Were any posts made while the account was hacked?

i dont think any posts were made, no...

but some people on my msn are people from DP, i had no other way to contact them, and i know the hacker was attempting to scam them..

and sure, the guy got lucky that i used hotmail for many accounts, still doesnt excuse the failure of DP to respond to my emails requesting help does it?

    Hey,

Sorry to hear that, yes the hacker was on your MSN account yesterday as he tried asking to lend my Steam Account. But not responding to 3 emails? That is pretty rong.

    Failure?

DO you know how many emails get sent each day?

The bottom line is you need to be more careful!

you are fully responsible for your msn account no matter if it was hacked or not, #2 DP does reply to mail, the volume they get is i remember was 60,000 emails a month, so it takes time to sift through it all,
i have emailed dp while banned and i can tell you that all 22 emails i sent were replied to, although about a week to 10 days later. over a period of 3 months. thats how long the ban ended up being.

and another thing..using same passwords for all accounts is a really bad idea..

its good that i have a good memory..i keep differnt passwords for forums..for emails etc..

that way you dont get messed up..but you need to remember the passwords..but thats atleast safer than placing all your eggs in one basket

So basically you got hacked and are blaming other people? DP does a great job at replying but as both Rob and Samantha said, it is impossible to do so instantly. You need to be more careful and not use the same information and passwords for all accounts. You are the one totally responsible for your own accounts and to protect those accounts from hackers.

You need to be responsible with your accounts. What do you expect DP mods to do about it? Ban your account?? :D

Hope your account wasnt too badly messed up, could i suggest maybe going to hotmail and answering the secret question answer which will reset your password. if your like me and use @pop3 email address for msn then youll have to use the .net passport settings ect..

one: it wasnt lack of protection it was carelessness on my part with my msn account, that much I accept.

two: the passwords WERE different, however I didn't have access to the hotmail account that I registered to DP with, the hacker had, so when he changed the password I could not do anything other than mail DP.

three: no posts were made no, but you all know that DP has its fair share of fraudsters, as any large forum has I guess? All I knew was that there had been LOTS of activity in my main paypal account (yep, hotmail again :s) and some of the figures made me think that *maybe* the culprit was using my accounts to con DP'ers

four: for that reason, more than anything else, I tried to alert DP, and yeah jdR, why not ban the account? at least until I had regained access to the hotmail account that was the root cause of the problem.

you all seem to think that he got access to my other accounts because the passwords were the same, that is not the case, he had access to the email address used to register those accounts. because of that, when he clicked the "forgot password" link, he got the mails to reset the passwords or the password itself. I was careful with all the accounts EXCEPT the msn, that was my slackness that made it so easy for him to gain control.

My point was, and still is, if someone mails DP informing them of unauthorised access then they should take steps to protect both the account holder and the other members. In my opinion they didnt, regardless of the volume of emails. That is my opinion only, and you can agree or agree to disagree, that is yours.

and anyway, not as bad as ebay, when I mailed them I specifically told them NOT to contact me at the compromised address as I had no access... They blocked the account and then... they mailed the compromised address with details as to how recover it.

I mean.. as you can probably tell, its been a bit of a stressful few days, 4 days to recover the msn account and subsequent accounts relating to that, 5 to recover the ebay account, at least paypal were efficient in their response blocking the account and cancelling all transactions immediately, (I could call them though, that's the difference).

As it is, I don't think that I have lost anything, personally or financially, except sleep. I will know more in about a week when the payments that were made will either revert back to my account or they wont. As far as I know they are all stopped, and I have now recovered all of my accounts, changed the passwords and the email addresses associated with most of them.

As for answering the "security question", the hacker had changed that already and was still able to regain access even after I had changed everything again! It took 5 attempts to regain total control but not before the hacker had deleted a lot of my address book/msn contacts :( And no, I have no idea how he was able to keep getting back into my account, different answers to different security questions didn't stop him, one theory is that he had been mailed a link to reset the password at some point and was able to use that, (which is supposed to be a one time link but if you hit back instead of done you can re-use it several times apparantly). I guess I'll never know..

I have his home address, 2 email addresses and his IP address though, so not all bad ;)
