3 domains, 1 business - what to do

    hi there

I own www.mycompany.com and I provide X services, also own
    www.xservices-city1.com
    www.xservices-city2.com

xservices city# are the keywords that I'm fighting for ( doing "fine" so far with no knowledge of SEO)

I've heard that if I use the 3 domains with the exact same content ( 3 identical sites with different URL) I can be penalized .... I don't know if that's true or possible.

What would you recommend as the best tactic to take advantage of these 3 domains, 1 is my company's name, and the other 2 are the exact keywords that I'm trying to push ?

Sorry but I have one beer to many :), if you need clarification or more details let me know

Sorry and thanks for the help

    do this:

use www.mycompany.com for your main business. don't host any website on the other two domains but redirect each of them to the mail domain.

That is what I'm doing right now, but want to take advantage of the keywords on the url.

www.xservice-city#.com won't get indexed if it doesn't have any content right ?

I hope that I was clear enough when presenting my situation

Never use the same content on multiple sites, if you are covering the same service/products for different areas and want to create different sites for reaching each market then build each site and content unique for that market, with unique content....

Building the same site and trying to cover different areas by just changing keywords and optimization will not work, better off creating three unique sites or one site with unique content to each area...

I perfer the latter, build a site for each area and create unique content for each site but targetting a different area, will do better in the SERPS as a niche then one site trying to cover to much...

also, if you do the latter you can tie each little "niche" into one main site eventually and if done right will make you an authority on the niche with visitors and search engines but many might argue you will need to do that on different IP and C-class, but for a few sites it will probably work fine, if you were doings tens or hundreds of sites it might raise red flags....

so changing content will make each site unique ..... but how much content needs to be modified in order to make it look unique for search engine purposes?

The idea is to keep the keywords in the content but basically use the keywords in the url

I've read that you only have to change 15% of a sites content to make it unique, and its worked for me so far with no dup penalty.

I would put other 2 domain pages in my main domain and 301 redirect those domain to these pages.
It will not loose anything and your domain main company domain will gain more authority.
It may take some days to transfer all juice and ranking after 301ing.

P.S: If you didn't like my idea, don't link your other domains to your main domain, they will have 0 link juice as Google knows those domains are yours.

If you have time to maintain those 3 sites with different contents than its fine to keep them all. But if only one content then use a 301 redirect to the preferred. Also duplicate content will not be penalized at the moment but its not good for SEO in general.

hey just use the main domain as your primary website.
Now create sub domains to your primary domain
Make the other domains 301 redirect to your city.primary-domain.com

Just create a small php script and use it with .htaccess to add few keywords to your main content
eg: If your main site is about Travel and your other domains are USA, UK etc. Add these extra keywords to the main content and may be add a scraper tool to grab local weather etc and add to your content.

This way the content is a little different from your main content and you get better rankings for your city domains too since they fall under your main domain and take that credit

Thank you guys for all the answers, but seems like I'm gonna have to give you more info about my particular situation for you to understand it better. I'm not looking for traffic as if I were making money online, I need my site to rank high on Google, as of now I'm around #4 for my keywords, which is not bad at all, but would like to rank better.

    Specific situation:

Main domain: www.windowwashingpro.com - which provide service to different areas, but my goal is called "Katy", so I bought

www.katywindowcleaning.com and www.katywindowwashing.com which are the keywords that provides me with more traffic.

Keywords are window washing katy tx, or window cleaning katy tx so I think that if I can provide content to this sites, even when they will only serve on purpose, my rank might get better.

Hope that my situation is more clear now and help you guys help me better.

I'm gonna look into 301 since I don't know what that means.

thanks again and sorry for the long post
