Well thanks to Shoemoney's $250 link purchase I've made back the money I spent on the press release. I'll give one final update on the PRWEB numbers just for fun, even though they probably won't mean much.

    99,061/613/0/3/18

I think I'm definitely going to try our prnewsrelease.com for my next release. I haven't found much info on DP about them so I'll make another thread about them when I release that one.

    Jenn,

Solid advice there. I also have used PRWeb for years at various levels of payment based on goal of release.

Sent one out the door on 9/13/06 (editorial score 5)

    http://www.prweb.com/releases/2006/9/prweb436707.htm

    Stats: 62,164/417/0/5/26

This one has been manually pitched at trade media outlets as well.

I've been planning to do a press release as well, but I want to do a complete redesign of my website and make sure that visitors will want to stay and browse around!

Does PRWeb put in more stars for a bigger donation?

The PRweb stats honestly mean next to nothing. Their pickup number are just estimates. What really matters is whether or not you got actual pickups in the media, and where. The views alone can be because of placements from upgrades or a good title. But 100,000+ views of the release doesn't mean a thing if no one thought it was newsworthy enough to actually cover. That's what you need to worry about tracking.

You took the first place? Nice move! Things seem to be really cooking now - I hope he gets more publicity too - then people will click on my links.

lol - a cent more than Shoemoney, he's gonna be pissed! :p

Anyway Shoemoney thinks it's a good idea:
    http://www.shoemoney.com/2006/09/22/the-next-million-dollar-idea/

and I planned to blog it yesterday, but fell asleep :D here it is:
    http://www.modernseo.com/search-eng...ilding/the-linkexperiment-million-dollar-idea

After all, the whole point of a press release is to get traffic and links... Hope it works out for you!

you saying i won't fulfill the first one! haha sadly, I would much rather fulfill the first than the second, but you're right :)

Yea, the link sales have been out of control. Every time I leave the computer for a significant amount of time now, I have to scramble to catch up with any links that weren't place automatically. The page has gone up $1,000 in the last 12 hours. Not a bad hourly rate at all. I might issue another press release when the page hits $5,000 and just go for it and really burst the bubble.

thanks for the post shoemoney and sixty!

Ouch! Hearing that is worse than nails on a chalkboard to PR people. :p The "whole point" of a press release is actually to get mass media coverage and disseminate news. ;)

no problem and becoming an olympic runner is just my opinion, you can do whatever you set your mind to!
    lol :p

mass media coverage = traffic + links -> word of mouth -> even more links + traffic

Well links in the actual press releases don't tend to lead to a huge amount of direct traffic compared to getting links in the media outlets you're targeting... but the rest of the equation? Sure... I'll buy that line of thought. ;)

I just wanted to give an update on a release I did yesterday through PRWeb, which focused on a new outdoor-related site that I just launched.

    Here are the numbers:
    20,492/646/4/8/0

I got picked up by ESPNOutdoors.com and National Shooting Sports Foundation (they put on a huge outdoor trade show in Vegas every year) in the first day and saw quite a bit of traffic. Not bad for $40.

Great pickups. Congratulations. You should post a link to the release so others can take a look. :)

Holy crap, he's got over $5,000 now! He should use that money and go in for more press releases and get more blog posts (probably should use Digg :))
