I'd not bother with too many directories. While they may help some there is very little traffic from them. I'd stick with social bookmarking sites, forum sigs, and relevant blog posts. Many of which you can get for free!

You can also do a few link exchanges, article exchanges, and other things which can help directly and indirectly and which will cost little or nothing.

When I want PR and to move up in the serps I go for directory backlinks. When I want traffic I look for related sites and try to get backlinks there.

I would like to suggest you getting some directory backlinks and you can also buy some links from sites with related content. Both of this kind of backlinks will help you to upgrade your current position. Don't forget to put keywords in your anchor text.

    I'd say try to get a relevant PR7 or PR8. One PR8 and a few PR5s could get you a PR6, maybe even 7.

I would diversify a bit, sponsor 2 Wordpress themes, a few paid directories with high PR categories, submission to a few hundred free directories and buy a few PR5 or 6 text links.

there are quite a few high pr6 ranks costing within 10-20 usd even. search it yourself , try to get 1-2 really good links instead of 100's of rank 0 fly by night directories , with no incoming traffic.

your first post stated sitewides. I agree, however when doing buying these type of links reserch the site well and ensure the site has a good amount of inner pages which are pageranked or at least indexed by google.

I always start by paying someone to do lots of directory submissions. Then perhaps pay for some article marketing. Next, get a subscription to the 3waylinks network, and maybe buy some cheap links from people on this forum if you have any money left.
