The background is added because of the white in the design, supposing you will be using something darker for background (than white) afterall.

Hey, I like it. Looks like you set the bar kind of high on this one. One thing that i'm concerned with is it looks a little too 'corporate.' and business like. From the original logo, it kind of takes the fun out of it. If that makes sense.
