Well jokomamamita is PARTLY true- SHE did not get paid because her info and submission got lost due to a personal tragedy. She HAS now been paid. But to say "this guy doesn't pays" is NOT true as everyone else I have worked with on DigitalPointe and elsewhere HAS been paid and one person here even left positive feedback as to how fast I (usually) do pay.

BTW jokomamamita is an AMAZING artist (even if she defames me!) and if she submits anything here or elsewhere look out all!!!

sorry BlueEyedGhost ... I have a lot to say and then got caught up with jokomamamita's 'distaction'.

First, I love to give feedback, not as personal vanity, but hopefully to share in a dialogue about what everyone thinks. I especially want everyone who doesnt get selected to still get something out of the experience/contest. I dont know how may of you designers really appreciate that or not so I try to hold back (at least a bit.)

And I must say that my feedback is only mine and cant possibly be objective. But I -am- the client and so hopefully you folks appreciate the experience of hearing what goes through a client's mind? Afterall, that's the reality even if it's not objective!

SO... I think you have the right idea but I dont think it comes accross as well as blankeyecue's design. Here's why: One of the main criteria of a logo is that it is "striking and memorable". To do this (I think) one wants the simplest design possible- because the more complicated it is, the more distracting it is likely to be. A good example is watari's (whose image mysteriously disappeared!) The design might be the winner since it IS simple AND manages to combine "photographer" and "model". HOWEVER there is something cluttered about it... maybe its the scope behind the type that while a GREAT idea somehow conflicts with being able to read the "phototopia" as clearly and quickly as I'd like.

Yours too is very simple, which is very good... but the danger in being as simple as possible, is not being striking at the same time. Although there's nothing wrong with a symbol being (literally) in the middle of the type, here I think it chops up and obscures the word (making it harder to read) and the symbol itself, although also clean and simple just seems too heavy the way it is positioned.

So what does everyone in the marketing world mean by "memorable"? When someone goes on a vaction and comes back they might say it was a memorable experience or trip. They mean it was "pleasant". But I dont think that's what's meant by memorable in a logo!

Basicaly the first time someone/anyone sees the logo (surfing the web to a site page or seeing a banner ad, or if you are a zillion dollar corporation on a bus ad going by or on tv) the logo has a SPLIT SECOND to make an impression. It has to catch your eye SO FAST that your brain thinks "wow! without even knowing it said that.

So the simpler a logo is, the more likely it is going to do that. But your design as presented doesnt mix the symbol and the type 'right' and I think the type itself is also harder to read than some others. Even though Blankeyeque uses the simplest (some might even say boring?) font the overall image is catching. I think that's because it doesn't fight with the symbol and the symbol is strong enough to balance the whole thing out. Noscire does basically the same thing an I think, so far, its my second favorite. Also Ollie.

BTW Ollie is also (IMHO) one of the most talented artists on this whole friggin sight! I was secretly hoping he'd contribute something and he did. But I have to say that I am dissapointed with his two entries. Not because he's isn't great (he is!) but because I dont think it compares to some of his other work. The model on the top of the type IS pretty darn good and what he does with the type - 1) making it unique 2) creating a platform for the model AND 3) adding a "photo" element into the whole mix (it COULD be a camera) IS pretty brilliant. It catches you very quick and then later you begin to see more and more- just like a true piece of art. Somehow though I prefer blankeyecue at this point and I'm not sure what I'd change in Olli's for it to be the winner. But it IS CERTAINLY brilliant. My point, to you, is that Olli's is the BEST implementation of the simplest design.

I hope this helps someone and doesn't offend anyone. Most of these designs are truely amazing. Thanks,

    Doug

blankeyecue - I think so far you are the winner, whether you make any changes or not, but if you're up to it what do you think of trying out putting a "model" silloutte in the center of the spiral of the image? I guess it would be as a cutout? If you think this is not a great idea just say so and don't bother, but if you think it might ad anything and not ruin the simplicity of the symbol you might give it a try? I was thinking of something along the lines of the female Noscire or Ollie used (both very similar.) Either way let me know your thoughts. Thanks,

    Doug
