This story is misleading or poorly written or one of the two. Does he do $150,000 in sales each year or is that profit? It seems to go back and forth (or the writer doesn't get the difference) on that. It says his budget is $4000 a month for expenses. That's ~$50k, year.

I'm betting it's just poorly written - it also says he saves 5,000 a month in addition to that 4k budget. That's 108,000 - factor in taxes and it sounds about right.

Big whoop - in the glory days of Silly Valley in 2000, I had 30 programmers, most of whom were that age or younger, all getting six figures. Of course they all blew it all on BMW leases... :D

Yea, that doesn't seem like a big deal. I was making that at 24 too.

Still a good story. Just proof that anyone can succeed in this business with little financial backing to get started.

Wish him the best of luck on his new ventures... though I think it won't be as easy the second time around. The market is much more competitive now...

I dont know why but by looking at the site I have a really hard time believing it makes that much money.

I know alexa isnt a good source but even by just looking at that this site has had barely any traffic until recent. But then again if this story just came out and webmasters are reading it then it will cause a huge boost.

But I just dont see it. Think its a marketing scam to get people to his site. :)

I always wonder when sites with lower PR and lighter visibility than mine - show up with numbers like that. Is that his pay after expenses? By the numbers stated yes. But doesn't it also talk about ad pay? He probably has MFA sites

Its not a high paying site. He says they are all drop shipped so that means he only gets a fraction of the sale. He probably would have to sell 100,000+ of those bags a year to make those numbers. Thats around 273 a day. Give me a break!

In order to do those numbers he has to have more sites. A lot more.

*Edit* I did not see that these bags are sold from $75-300 so my numbers are off. But still seems very undoable. :)

I think it was referring to the ppc that he uses to get traffic to his site.

I think its definitely a puff piece. According to overture/wordtracker, "poof chairs" or "foof chairs" or whatever, get like 60 searches a day. That's not a whole lot. I can't see the numbers the story suggests from that, personally.

Glad he's doin good, but I don't see it. I know if I had a puff piece on CNN, I'd beg for a link to the site from the story, at least. That's the whole point of getting press. LOL

If 100,000+ is a success story, then CNN can get a ton of those from here at DP. Take people like Shawn, Shoemoney, Fryman, etc etc etc and the list goes on. I wish I had the list somewhere.

I think someone needs to test out this theory.

poofchairs.net is unregistered. poofchairs.com only has 8 backlinks in Google.

Get the .net and outrank em then report back. :)

It'd be easier to make a page on my site and title it "poof chairs" - there are only 820 sites competing for the phrase. So a top 10 would not be difficult :p

Ha, I was kind of wondering how long it would take for people to start copying him. Not a bright marketing strategy in my opinion to tell people exactly how you're making lots of money.

Better yet, contact CNN and pay the big bucks for a story on yourself :)

I think this is a bogus story as well. Nothing seems to quite add up. Seems to be a successful attempt at druming up business.

Oh, I think it's a real story - but if the kid thought he'd get more business by having a PR agent get CNN to write the article, it probably backfired: now a whole bunch of idiots are going to get in there and compete with him to sell puffy chairs and drive his PPC costs way up.
