I've been playing around with SP2 over the last week.

Guess what, the IE pop up blocker is blocking Adsense ads by default.

This is one of the first real "strikes" in the search engine war imo, MS really socked it to Google with this one.

I have been running SP2 for months and can safely state that it does not block Adsense ads. Adsense ads are not pop ups...

Did you change anything in the default configuration/installation? If you've been running it for months are you sure you have the most recent release?

I know Adsense ads are not pop ups, instead of saying the pop up blocker is blocking them I'll rephrase and say IE is blocking them.

I did a reformat on a client's pc last night. Installed XP Pro & SP2. Browsed a few sites to test things out and noticed Adsense was being blocked on the sites I was visiting. Checked my own sites with Adsense - the ads were being blocked also. I took a second PC that already had XP Pro installed and applied SP2 - same result. I was unable to view Adsense Ads on any site.

I'm going to mess with the configuration settings tonight and see where the issue lies, I didn't have time to keep messing with it last night.

    do you have norton installed?

that may be it, it blocks adsense ads...

I can't imagine it would be at all legal for microsoft to specifically block adsense ads.

No, the computer I was working with didn't have anything installed besides XP Pro & SP2 - it was a fresh install after a format. The other computer had the free AVG, no Norton present.

I think there's an extension for Mozilla/Firefox that does the same - blocks advertising including Adsense. If my memory is correct, the extension is called Adblock. I would not be surprised if MS incorporated this same technology into SP2. Their stance would be "we're not blocking Google, we're blocking ads".

I'm sure when I get back to the PC and start messing with it I'll find a way to disable the ad blocking, just wondering if the millions of users with auto update enabled will do the same thing…

I can confirm that it does not block any adsense ads. It does block popups. We have deployed it to over 50 machines. It does cause issues with many programs, see the list here http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?kbid=884130&product=windowsxpsp2.

    * Edit: Here's an article from MS that explains how SP2 will react to websites: http://msdn.microsoft.com/security/default.aspx?pull=/library/en-us/dnwxp/html/xpsp2web.asp

Storm in a teacup. As soon as these adblocking software items cause a problem, then google will block users of those pieces of software from searching the index. Google only make money from adverts that it arries. users who block those advert only COST google money.

Now the next stage is that google bans the name of the software from being searched, it bans any sites who sell the software, it then gets publicity that tells the world. instal this software, and you will not be able to use Google. ALL the other ad driven netwroks will follow suit, and the software will die.

    End of game.

Microsoft are no way going to be dumb enough to unleash software that does this, they would have to be nuts, as they are already facing a shitstorm over search integration into Longhorn.

I might be way off the mark here, but I can see no way that it can be right. I will be shocked if I am wrong though :0

I was surprised too. (A little, but remember it's MS we're dealing with here)

Like I said I'm sure there's something in the configuration that will allow users to enable/disable this "feature".

I asked another associate of mine to check - he's involved in the deployment of SP2 for one of the largest commercial user bases in the USA. He has access to thousands of machines and should able to do some quick looking around.

Erm, I don't think G would be stupid enough to do that. People would just go to Y! or more likely MSN if their normal SE wasn't working.

People depend on the OS they run, not the SE they use.

    Little update:

I checked with my associate who was involved in deploying SP2.

"Less than 1% of our user base reported problems relating to IE after the deployment of SP2. In the few cases where we reviewed the problem it was almost always attributed other software on the user's machine that was not functioning properly with SP2. We experienced a handful of cases where no other conflicts could be detected. In those cases a simple redeployment of SP2 solved the issue."

I did a quick remote check on the PC I installed SP2 on (the machine that was not a fresh format) and low and behold there are traces of Norton all over the machine. Looks like someone botched the uninstall at some point. I'm going to completely remove Norton on that machine tonight, and try reinstalling SP2 on the other machine.

Looks like it's not going to be an issue after all.

sp2 does block adsense, I can no longer see adsense ads in IE, firefox or opera, the code is in the source but it doesn't render. it seems all google has to do is tweak the code a bit so programs can't detect it, I dunno

It blocks activeX content on a page.
I tried opening a html page (on the harddisk) on my own computer and the adsense ads are blocked. However, when I browse the same page after it has been uploaded to my server, it still shows up allright. So, I guess I'm ok with it.

well, I have SP2 on 3 machines....I have not changed any of the settings, and I see adsense fine.

<edit>Actually, I have it on 4, but SP2 killed one machine...but the adsense ads were showing on that one too before it went out to pasture :)</edit>

    Trust me, Internet explorer sucks.

    Be a Firefox fan.

But I don't think it should do such a thing.........

I mean google ads cant be banned if they are in HTML source,

IE will ban the java ads..................
