    That's pretty bad even if it was free.

    You almost never see a single column site nowadays, it just looks so sparse.

    Then you should describe what you need.

    I almost always pay up front for work, but I only work with very reputable people most of the time. I've still been burned a couple of times, because anyone can go awol at any time, no matter who reputable. But it's rare.
