It seems that the 20th Dec Google was updated. Do you have extra information on what this update is about? and What steps, if any, we should be taking to avoid its impact.

    Many thanks

    regards

See all threads about duplicate content, weak content, dropped weight, dropped site: results, supplemental results etc.

Then rebuild your site with proper content, to avoid its impact.

    Weak content only.

Make sure each and every page has at least over 50% (based on guesstimation) different content. Tone down sitewide rows and columns like footers and nav bars.

    That's it.

There is no "quick check list". Do the leg work just like everyone else.

What exactly is content? Is it the entire page content(including HTML) or just the text that the users can see?

Everything visible in a text browser like links. Or as displayed in Google's cache.

Basically, all text + alt text.

I'm not entirely sure whether this includes raw HTML or not. They do index it so when doing hash comparisons they probably include it but I wouldn't be surprised if they discard HTML when it comes to duplicate filtering either.

Good starting point - and keeping you on the safe side is to focus on visible text + alt.
