Nod 32 is the best... which is ESET Smart Security 4. Plus it's cheap too! :D

a good virus can exist on your system for years and you would never know. And how would you know a page is safe to visit?

First off, thanks for the +1 :D
Those are good questions. Regarding the viruses ... format the drives regularly and use virtualization software (from VMWare ofc, sadly they are the best). That way if you even suspect something is wrong it's like two clicks, wait 20mins, new OS is up, restore backup data, finished - all viruses pwned. I have a clean template virtual machine that I like to use.
Another layer is the freeze boot software; forgot it's exact name. Don't hold it against me, it's 3AM here. What this software does is take a snapshot of your OS and data. After that every time you reboot, it restores the OS to that snapshot. Combined with dropbox, or other web2.0 backups, there is no problem with permanent data.
As for the safe pages, that's more of an art than a science. General rule of thumb is: if the website is suspicious in any way then there is something wrong there.
Sorry I wasn't clear enough in my first post. If you have any more questions please ask and I'll answer tomorrow when I get some sleep.

    Cheers,
    SM

Ms Essential does a good job concerning surfing. Chrome also provides malware protection. The best of it, never surf on porn sites if you don’t want to be branched by the virus haven. :)

See, that's what I'm saying. There is no way anyone can tell if a site is bad or not. After years of experience, yes, you get a feel for things but, even then, you can get caught.

Another vote for Avast. I've used it for about 3 years and no problems. You can read the reviews at cnet [dot] com and also download it for free.

Im using an internet security software called Eset Smart Security. Fast, auto updates and does what it supposed to. Here's a list of the best antivirus software.

But still too few user reviews to know which one is the most popular among internet users but all brands you talk about is there.

I use AVG and find it great. Very user friendly, free and uses very little system resources even while scanning.
