    No, it is not true that link building and directory submission not helpful in nowadays. I not heard about like this, i think web 2.0 is latest technique in SEO.

    I think the best of you combine and research. For SEO you should have keyword rich, useful content on your website and you site must be optmized, too. Then you can use link building techniques, social sites and article directories to get quality backlinks. I usually mix these methods.

    My honest opinion:

    I think submitting unique articles to article directories are the best way the drive in traffic.

    2. A closed linkwheel technique is becoming old because Google knows how to detect it. It's better if you make a complex linkwheel :

    This one is hard to recognize and it always works.

    3. Blog Commenting, Forum posting, Social Bookmarking and Directory Submission, RSS submisison are also good methods for ranking your website but they are less effective (unless you are willing to do everything manually, but this is time consuming).

    A good linkwheel campaign must include all these 3 points. You need all those small things like the RSS submission, Social bookmarking etc. to strengthen your linkwheel and to feed them.
