    First off, it's Diwali and not devali .... and secondly the literal meaning of Deepawali = lines of earthen lamps.

    Deepawali is the term used in Punjab, Gujarat and Uttar Pradesh regions, where the more pure form of Hindi is common, whereas the other regions which speak derived hindi, the term Diwali is used!

    Since the earthen lamps are known as both "Deep" and "Diya" ... hence the names Deepawali and Di[ya]wali (Diwali)
