First, I was wondering what do you think is the best way to sort listings in a directory. By date submitted or by PR? And if by date submitted, the newest first, or the newest listings last (at the bottom).

    And second question.
What do you think about the name field that appears in listings details page. Is it really necessary? Should I remove it to make the submit page even cleaner? Does it really serve any purpose? I see that almost all directories have it, but what for?

    Thanks :D

I think the name field should be kept, it does no harm and shows that people actually use your site. You could just minimise the font to clean things up.

Sorting by PR is best I think, with highest PR at the top. Of course people always have the option of buying featured links to stay at the top ;)

I sort them by date, newest first.
owner name is not necessary for nobody.

We sort by date (ascending order) also in LinkBook.org - it was a free directory before I acquired it and I didn't think it would be fair if new submissions appeared below the existing free ones.

As far as the name goes, I guess it's up to the directory owner to decide if they want to display the info or not. I haven't had any objections to it from submissters.

    I use:
Free & Regular listings by Link Type + Hits
    Featured - by Date Added

Recently changed Featured to random sort (more fair?)

I say by date with the newest on top. As far as the name field, I see no use for it and if you can delete it.

I believe there's a mod available at the phpld forums to add the sort by date option

i like sort by pr option better for all listings hence why www.idk.in is sorted by pr ... all the way for featured and for regular.

    for name

i think it is good because if people go to the detail page they would be like oh .. Chris Hoffman owns ... so many sites.... it just builds your rep. i think

yea, me too. This way you get a higher listing due to the result of harder work and not just from timing and luck.

pretty much the same but there is no need to edit the index.php in the newest versions. So the mod I posted is cleaner.

actually, i prefer to sort by date as it gives incentive for customers to submit earlier rather than later. It is usually those low in PR that needs more publicity and marketing. And if you keep putting them at the last, it becomes a vicious cycle and they will always get less attention. Rather, i like to reward my early customers as they deserve it..... my 2 cents.

    Cool,

I agree with you. I was sorting it by PR, but I suppose by date would be the fairest way to do it. And I will then just remove the small PR pictures next to listings.
I'll give it a try to see how it looks like :)

    Thats 100% true ........

If we sort by PR - high PR sites will keep sitting on high PR top pages while low/zero PR listings will be kept pushing on low/no PR pages.

So sorting by date is recommended - FIRST COME FIRST SERVE :)

@mhamdi - Thanks, i will going to add it ..

I don't think there really is one single best way. I sort alphabetically, simply because that makes it easiest for webmasters to find out whether or not their website is already listed.

Ideally everyone should mix it up a bit: people make duplicate submissions with the same anchor text and descriptions, so if every directory is ordering by PR or alphabetically then you get the potential for a lot of sameness. Another good method you could adopt would be to develop your own ranking system based on your own criteria, as in Awesome Directory.
