He may be second in Google now, but I'm guessing he will be blacklisted before long.

Sounds like he's using a lot of tools/software to do little work.
If he fails to do it right he might get penalized as well.
    Interesting strategy though.

Dude, that is so black hat it's not funny. Follow those directions and it will only bring you trouble when (not if) you are caught.

Blackhat is not the way to go ...

Soon it won't be in the top anymore ...

To rank fast is not possible ... without doing fishy tricks that will end your "success" early ...

This seems like a short term solution. He'll be at the top for a short while then Google will realize what he's doing and his site won't be at the top anymore.

Agree, this kind of bla ck hat technique is going to last less and less, and after Panda this is a certified way to get blacklisted. Which, BTW, I wouldn't mind at all.

Do a Google search on "Panda" or "Farmer" algorithm update... there's plenty of info around. Even I wrote a post how the new Google Panda algorithm impacts website localization.

I don't believe the panda update will be much of a problem.
New blackhat programs use article spinners etc. to look original.
When google finds a new way to find the black hat seo'ers and spammers, then the black hatters will just find another way to exploit it.
I'm not pro blackhat, but I'm not naief either, they have existed for a long time, and many of them are getting good results and money. (probably more of them get into trouble and don't earn a thing)

Yeh, the few pro blackhatters that always keep up with new methods tend to do really well.
Also, if you mix you backlinks 60% whitehat and 40% blackhat I think it will be really hard for
    search engines to spot it.

I'm no blackhatter but it's kinda tempting sometimes. :p

The question is, though, is will he sustain long term results? That's all that matters.

I would avoid any sort of short cuts when performing SEO on any domain you wish to keep long term. As a lot of people mentioned already, it might give you some quick results in the short run, but ultimately it will not last at best and get you in trouble at worst.
