2 Commone SEO fallacies from SEO Experts

Okay, I'm bored and I thought I would write about common SEO fallacies that I read all over the place from SEO experts.

    1. "The demise of the blogroll link" or "Google doesn't pay attention to blogroll links"

I can't tell you how often I've read these comments. People who make these statements often have zero support to prove that they're true. Granted, if someone can point me to a link where someone did an intelligent experiment to prove this, then I might consider it having some validity.

From my experience, I have a number of blogs that I play around with. yes, blogroll links are one of the most abused SEO strategies from the past several years. I have one blog that has a PR 4, ranks very well for competitive search terms, and has little else other than relevant, authoritative blogroll links. It has barely any deeplinks from external domains, yet many of the pages/posts on the site have PR 1-3.

I have another blog with maybe 70% deep links, has only a few low quality, but relevant blogroll links and it doesn't rank nearly as well for competitive search terms. It has a homepage PR of 1.

Other counter point, SEO Moz has shown that Yahoo backlink count is a good predictor of how well a site ranks for competitive search terms. Guess what, if you're only getting in content links, you're never going to mass as many backlinks as someone that is on 10 blogrolls from quality blogs that have thousands of indexed pages collectively.

    2. PageRank doesn't matter

I read this every day here at DP. Yes, it doesn't matter as much as it used to, but it's still a good indication of the SEO health of your website. Chances are if you have good organic SEO strategies and create an authoritative site that ranks well, it will have a high PR (on the home page and on many internal pages).

Well, what have been your experiences?

    Nice post. :)

For the blogroll, Google likes it! and as what you have said, it is being abused however Blogroll is just another name for sitewide links on blogs. It is pretty much the same with recommended websites or other sites that you may like. Different names, same structure. Still, it is pretty useful.

For the PageRank, I personally couldn't care less however it is also true that shows a good indication of the SEO of your websites specifically its individual pages. Well a little PageRank on your website wouldn't hurt however many SEO enthusiasts and webmasters have completely misunderstood this and has become addicted to PageRank. Results? Paid links just to get High PR in hoping that their websites would look with authority.

Thanks for sharing this dude! :)

    1. Blogrolls are still links, I agree. But when it's packed with 30-40 links, it loses it's value quickly.
    2. The problem with PageRank is that it's only an indication of how many high PR links a webpage has. Yes, high PR is generally good. But I've seen an website with only 2-3 high PR links from a network with no rankings in Google.

and there are PR 1-2 websites who rank better than PR 3 or 5 websites in Google.

That's because it matters what the relevancy of the high PR link is. I think if I had a high PR link on a gaming/RPG related site it'd help boost that site up more than if it was on a health related site.

    That's true for sure.

    Groovystar:
Yeah, Google's getting very good at relevancy of the links. Some SEO that I know don't even want links from sites that are not relevant even if they have high PR.

    Grimm:
That's hard to evaluate since there are so many other factors that go into ranking. However, I know from experience that if you have two blogs writing on the same sports team for example, if one blog has a PR 5 homepage and the other one has a PR3, If the guy with the PR5 homepage writes an article, it will nearly always rank ahead of a similar article from a guy on a lower PR site.

SEO Moz is the defacto expert at SEO. They have a few free tools which perplex me. http://www.seomoz.org/tools

I've compared many of my domains with their "domain strength tool"

One of my new sites with a PR 1 homepage and zero PR on internal pages has the highest domain strength rating.
