HostGator did the same thing to me. However, I use 1and1 for some of my smaller sites and all seems to be well, no outage as of yet.

hmm, I use 1and1, and results have been mixed. Heres my experience in a nutshell:

    1. rates for ms hosting can not be better. 2 bones a month - can't beat it.
    2. server went down about four times in 10 months, but only for an hour or two each time. (4 too many if you ask me)
    3. they do offer web admin of files and permish, which is good
    4. they also allow you to set your folders up as a newtwork place in windows, so you can easily upload, or edit your files.
    5. customer support with 1and1 is CRAP
    6. I called there a few times, and an old lady was trying to read from a scriptted document how to perform technical tasks that i'm sure she;d never heard of. If you want ANY service, you need to call the NEW SALES line, and escalate to a supervisor, and demand help on the spot. Oh yea, and get a speaker phone...you'll be on hold for a bit :)
    7. They allow you to host many sites/domains under 1 package.
    8. free push if you sell a domain.
    9. when I connect with frontpage or some other editor, the connection is VERY slow, and often "unexpectedly closes"

The bottom line is everyone has a different experience with every host. No host will be the same for everyone because eventually some screw up is bound to happen to someone. The only thing I would recommend is if you are thinking about a VPS just go straight to a dedicated. While it is more expensive you will possibly save yourself a lot of headaches. I've heard about many people having their VPS taken down without warning from many hosts. Doesn't matter where you are. If you are planning to expand your sites in the future anyway might as well go for dedicated and save yourself the hassles of moving later.

My sites were down for about a day and another one for over 2 full days, the traffic has been slashed in half for that one even 3 days later after running. Hopefully it'll pick up again :/

Good point. If you can afford dedicated hosting then I say jump on it. I will be doing this as soon as my monthly online income target is reached.

Sounds like 1and1 is good if you are trying out a bunch of new sites that you don't care about too much but I wouldn't put my established sites on there.
Everyone has a dif experience with different hosts but a lot of people seem to be having a very bad one with 1and1.

1and1 - US simply lacks power of HW
i moved away a months ago
why - too many resources used at 2% of account usage details see

    http://www.kriyayoga.com/familyforum/posts/554.html

I moved to hetzner.de - for a root server 2x300 sata x86_64 and lots more

and I had an instant 30+% traffic increase from very first day
see details about traffic increase due to clean UP vs 1and1.com
    http://www.kriyayoga.com/love_blog/post.php/702

the move was WELL worth it
the only thng I regret is having done my move so late
