Some of you, especially the newer webmasters or those who like to play with the latest in web technology may find the following read refreshing 19 ways not to design your web site What else would you add to the above list?
Nice list. Many of those things bother me a lot, especially the one about not doing things just because you can. That one applies to photoshopped graphics and people who use every every layer effect and filter on the same graphic just because they're there.
Actually, if your site doesn't work well cross-browser (regardless of what browser you're using as long as it as made within this century), then WELCOME TO 2007, [censored]!. But I digress. Actually, having a search engine on your site can improve the usability of the site and accessibility of the content to your site's visitors. I know of a few people who'll visit a site and head right for the search engine just to see how quickly they can find what they're looking for. Not useful for smaller sites, but if you have at least a hundred pages (I'd even say 50, depending on the type of content), then a search engine is a good idea. "Don't Make Me Think" (2nd Edition) by Steve Krug is a must-read if you want to learn more about this.
Mostly true. I believe, however, that dropdowns can be tastefully used. Especially if the client is set on having them.
Good tips there. I do take the search engine one with a pinch of salt. When I go to most websites, particularly product or review sites, I almost always use the search function to find what I am looking for fast, and when I need similar info in the future, I tend to go back to those sites where it was easiest to find information. Examples in case... CNET, Amazon, Newegg, to name a few. I know these are giants, but it's a good model I think, to allow your users to find what they need fast if they want to. If your search functionality is good it can also makes visitors stay to see what else they can find.
There is one which I would add... Don't ever build a site in Frontpage... sorry, had to say that... I have a personal problem with frontpage But thats a cool list, though I guess like all things, some of them could be taken with a pinch of salt...
nice tips. i have to disagree with this part! cause there are yet users who use dial up connection and a heavy flash site will take like 5-15 mins for them to get loaded!yes for just 30 sec difference yes that's the dumbest move to make but sometimes it's necessary!this part mainly depends on your site and your audience!
I'm one of those dialup users, and if I come across a Flash site, I'm leaving. The only way you can keep me there is if I've been ASKED first hand to check something out. Flash is a tool meant to enhance a Web site, not to make one.
