19 Things NOT To Do When Building a Website

Discussion in 'HTML & Website Design' started by eurochamp, Apr 24, 2007.

    1. DO NOT resize the user’s browser window, EVER.
    2. If your website requires the visitor to load your home page, and then “launch” your real website in a pop up, YOU LOSE.
    3. If your website asks the user which version they’d like, high bandwidth or low, HTML or Flash, you ALSO LOSE.
    4. If your website is ALL Flash, FIRE your web development company, and if you made it, add it to your portfolio under “Useless web projects I’ve done” and start over.
    5. DO NOT try to reinvent the website navigation.

The rest can be found at

some of its pretty funny! enjoy the read.

I think my two main pet hates are sites that resize browsers and site's that mess around with my status bar.

    Instant close.

^ blinking text is horrible! Especially when the colors are bright and contrast each other.

Also: don't build a splash page! It's not necessary and wastes visitor's time...

I am absolutely 100% against complete flash websites. I also hate flash intro's into websites. Flash is best left from subtle effects throughout the site, not anything else... in my opinion.

    my thoughts exactly...

nice animated banners or headers...maybe a animated navigation menu (nothing too dramatic)...is all flash should be used for...

My favorite example of "what not to do with a website" is jimjacobson.com . I use that in the Intro to Computers course I teach. An example gets the message across to non-web designers better than a list.

Even worse than asking a user to choose between html or flash is forcing them into the higher bandwidth option...

"I'm sorry, you need Flash v21.72 to view this site. Mwaahaa!"

i also agree with full flash websites. i think its more of a beginners attitude to appreciate it so much. just stunned with animation and dont even bother to care with content and usability.

splash pages are the worst i don't really see the point of them. All they do is drive me nuts. That would be on my list of something never to put on a website.

They are sometimes useful :)...for certain sites...

I made a trick site one time...and the trick was getting past the splash page...so in that sense that site needed one...so I wouldn't say never
