174 clicks and no sales

I used Adwords to promote one product. I got 174 clicks with a CTR of 0.4%
and I have lost more than the commission I would have got If it had resulted in a sale. Can you tell me what's wrong with me it was only one single product. May be people looking for free things clicked my ads.

Sounds like the problem is that you targetted either way too many keywords, or ones not nearly closely enough related to the purchase cycle. 174 clicks with 0.4% CTR sounds to me like you're not targetting an audience who's interested in what you're selling.

How exactly did you advertise the product, and what kinds of keywords were you using?

Yeah, Telmari is absolutely right, it seems like you're using general keywords, for example 'web hosting' is a general, 'cheap web hosting' is a little more targeted, and 'mysql cheap web hosting' is laser targeted. Try to do the same with your keywords.

Did you add Free as a negative keyword?

You need to target the buy keywords for maximum profits

I don't see any IPod in your ad. People who want music for IPod won't click, but only people looking for free music for their pc.

This aren't good keywords.

I will click on it and expect some free archive of music, lol. That is the problem I think.

 

I'm not saying to follow my advice, but I'm trying to give you an idea on how you might better target people that want to buy.

Personally, these still sound like incredibly general keywords. For instance, someone looking for "Buy Music" could be looking to purchase a classical album on Amazon, while a person looking for "purchase ipod" really could be looking for the lowest deals on an ipod.

And, I hate to say it, but many of the "top" "unlimited mp3 movie ipod psp & zune" download sites have terrible refund rates because they're pretty low-quality. For instance, http://www.movieadvanced.com/ has a 30% refund rate - ouch.

If I were you, vic_msn, I'd try finding a new product - something where you can be pretty sure the audience you're targetting is one that will want to buy the product because you can use lingo geared specifically towards them, not just general keywords that you hope might be related to your audience.

I am about to use adwords to advertise my site which is reviews paid survey sites. Do you guys reckon this type of niche is too competitive or do you think I could eek out some profit if I was smart/wiley enough. Am I wasting my time with niches that have been pumped in the past ?

 

You can beat any competition if you put a little bit creativity into it, but if you're very new I would recommend you find a different niche.

 

not necessarily true. In my opinion you can succeed in any niche even as a beginner. You most certainly won't get he lion's share but you will get a positive ROI *if* and only if you laser-target your ads to a highly focused landing page. If you do it the Googlecash way (direct linking without pre-selling), you have to make sure that users are laser targeted.

Having looked further on your keywords, I realized that you was targeted like ANY person who is interested in downloading music whatever music that is. This it totally untargeted and I wouldn't wonder if you got no sales even after 300 clicks. My advice to you is to think as if you were the buyer/customer. If you were searching Google for "download free music"... would you want to be directed to a site that offers you to download music for your iPod for a monthly fee? I bet you wouldn't!

Heh, well, all that article talks about is people who don't change their campaign strategies when they start losing money - hopefully most affiliates realize that spending 100$ to make 25$ isn't such a great deal.
