Couldn't he just give the things he bought to the people he stole from :O.

Maybe just asking for a refund. After all, he is a kid.

Some punishment is essential, at 16 yo, he would know what he is doing. It is certainly wrong. Just that too harsh a punishment may destroy his future and turn him into a hard core criminal. This would be a waste. Some punishment with social counseling would be the best.

He belongs in jail no matter what his age is. It's insane how many people hack credit cards and put the details on things like forums just to increase their member count. If someone was spending your money, you'd want them to be punished no matter what their age is. Think about the people who worked hard to earn it. Most people don't have jobs that pay high enough to have no financial damage when others spend their money :S

He is not a hacker but a "scamster". What ever he did cant be considered hacking, he just stole user info, most probably using some easily available spying tools, fake logins and keyloggers, and made purchases.
    He is not talented..

I agree with dc0ded, and the fact that he had no idea what he was doing led to his arrest.

Using free tools can only get you so far.

Ok, he pays you with a stolen Paypal account, you send your PS3 to his address, Paypal then discover the account was stolen and take the funds off you to comply with their ToS. He's stolen your PS3 from you - do you still feel sorry for the poor kid?

I'd be pissed off, sure :D

But at the same time still feel sorry... he's still so young but has already screwed up his life. It's his human side that I'm feeling sorry for.

What was he like? Was he poor? Had anybody paid enough attention to him, to show him what's right, what's wrong? Where was his parents? Did anybody indoctrinate him about stealing from the people who had more money than him? What was he thinking? Was he a monster? A bandit? Or simply a curious kid who found something interesting to do online and tested how far he could go without actually realizing the consequences he would face afterwards?

Whatever his background... he screwed up his life. Forever everybody will probably remember him as "the thief".... :(

He is so young! I would feel that he should be given a change to rehabitate rather than send to a hardcore jail where it would be easy turn into a lifetime of crime for an impressionable young kid. He is only 16 come on, 5 years of jail?

All Warez and Hacking community must be closed they make such kids to go on wrong side.I rade in news paper few days back that one guy who is from Chennai hacked some paypal accounts and credit cards and bought lots of goods. He said he was member of an hacking community where people use to show how and what they hacked and hackers image in that community is like an hero (Exactly like here we get reps for helping others, there they get reps for showing there hacking talent) so they get attracted over it and they follow the same without thinking about it and results in this.

It's sad that he got into the wrong path at such a young age. But good that the police found out and could crack the racket.

    What ?

You feel sorry for a person who has stolen 5000+ Credit cards and paypals ?

The amount must be more than 100,000$ if we calculate the totals
