It's all a matter of personal taste. Sure there were more polished icons with nice gradients and things but at the end of the day, some people just prefer a simpler approach i've found. I wouldn't say it's not worth $125 either. How much do you think the likes of Sony, Comcast and other brands paid for what are effectively text-only logos? Also, I think the winning design will look better printed than the bulk of the other frontrunners.
Exactly why i chose this design. It's perfect for letterheads, business cards and will look very clean and professional on a website with a dark background. I think it's worth every penny of the $125, i could of easily gone to a local company and they'd have charged me well over 10x that price.
