That is plenty of space for any small - mid range forum.. If it gets huge, get a vps or dedicated server.

Well Posts (plain text) is never the problem. I'd say it could hold Millions of posts, but the problems are the attachements that the users might upload.

its very enough to start a forum.
Space will never be a big problem for you. However, if you start getting huge traffic, you will need to add bandwidth. But by that time, you will need to upgrade to VPS.

That can run a site with a million posts and 100,000 members with 8,000 daily unique visits. The issue would then become CPU and Mysql usage which would likely stretch past your TOS with the host.

Realistically any forum under 250k posts should be with shared hosting. It's when you start passing into the 500k post mark that you'd feel the negative effects of a shared environment.

I run dozens of MyBB forums across a variety of hosts including the most active MyBB forum in existence (20k posts per day).

@ Black Fire, I believe RectangleMan means hackforums.

@ OP, that is more then enough, your forum won't need a huge amount of bandwidth till after you've gotten quite popular. As for Disk Space, you'll find 10 GB will last you quite some time as a default installation won't use much at all, it just depends on your avatars and attachments.

you can even start with a shared plan. that specs is more then enough to start with.

when you start getting lot of sql timeouts thats when you need to think of an upgrade.

Quoted for truth (QFT). Its not the space thats going to get you - hard drives are cheap these days - its going to be the CPU and shared memory.

This is about how my server upgrades went - keep in mind these numbers are not "exact".
Shared server up to the 100,000+ post range
VPS until around 750,000 - 800,000 post range
First dedicated server (entry level) around 800,000 - 900,000 post
Quad core dedicated server with 8 gigs of memory 1 million+ post range.

I was stayed on a VPS until my forum reached around 2.5 - 3 million page views monthly. But load times were terrible, I should have switched to a dedicated when my forum reached around 2 million monthly page views.

My largest forum takes up about 10 gigs of space, and it has over 1.5 million post, and thousands of uploaded files. I personally have uploaded over 1,000 pictures. Its not the database that takes up the space, its the images and other file that people upload.

You don't have to worried about space and bandwidth (in most cases), the problem comes for the CPU for the PHP Processing and the MySQL query usage.

In any forum software, it is the safest option to disable attachment. It's okay to link to images but to allow upload of files could burden your server and increase bandwidth consumption.
