One way which isn't exactly the best way is to make a small widget for Macs, and a konfabulator for widget for PC to support your site (something as simple as an rss reader etc).

    so umm...

WhatiFind's recommendation in his point #23 is sketchy in 2006. It's mostly around Metatags and talks about SEs like Excite, Infoseek and Altavista.

Valuable stuff in the day, and to be sure there are a few things in there that are still good advice, but if you (the reader) don't know how to separate the wheat from the chaff regarding SEO, I think this piece is best avoided.

This is one of things I do:

1 - Do keyword research onto a specific topic that I enjoy.
2 - Register a domain that matches a keyword phrase from the above research performed (i.e. widgetsforsale.com).
3 - Setup a blog on the domain with WordPress.
4 - Setup a good sized ping list (I have 50 in my blogs).
5 - Publish a new piece of content 3 times/week on the blog.
6 - Once you have about 20-30 posts, spend a day doing directory submissions. The reason for waiting is that some directories won't accept sites that appear to be under construction.
7 - While waiting for the directories, continue posting 3 times/week.
8 - By now you should be having a casual steam of visitors into the blog. Now it's time to fix the default design, put in a niche template that works well with your content.
9 - Put in adsense or affiliate program support into your blog so you can slowly generate revenue from it.
10 - POST POST POST! By this point the search engines will probably be probing your site, up your posting rate to 5 times/week.
11 - Google Update! Google comes by and gives you some PR. Wohoo! No do a major link exchange campaign for 2-3 days solid. Do nothing but look for links.
12 - You should be touching your site on a daily basis. Every 2nd day make a post. Every other day spend 30 mins looking for links and directories and other places to promote your blog. Even if you only find 1 link in that 30 mins, you are being productive.
13 - You should have a good stream of people coming back to your site now. Setup various syndication feeds on it (i.e. Yahoo, etc) to go in addition to the RSS feed that wordpress offers.
14 - Success! Your site is now fairly popular and getting you the occasional sale/adclick. Keep it up. You can probably slow down on the link development, as you're probably receiving link requests from other websites by now.

When you post, make sure you post something INTERESTING. Otherwise people won't have reason to return to your site.

Add a forum was mentioned, but its worth mentioning again.
This way, you have on topic, relevant content added daily by everyone in the forum, not just yourself!

Adding a forum, though, is (my experience, YMMV) a pantload of extra work. Far more than just creating a few new sites.

I think it takes a particular kind of person to start up a forum from scratch.

Although if you are that sort, I'm sure it could be great.
