Yes there will be drawbacks to all of them but I think it would be interesting to see lots of ideas on how to help save the planet.

    1. Rich governments of the world should buy up rain forests from the likes of Brazil and Indonesia and protect them from illegal and excessive logging.

Sometimes being good for the planet is also good for one's wallet. For instance, if people took measures to make their homes more energy efficient and to build more energy efficient homes, they would spend less of their household budget on energy and directly help reduce the emission of pollutants associated with energy generation. This would also reduce the demand for limited energy resources.

The simplest way of conserving energy in a home is to turn off unneeded electrical devices and putting electronics on switched outlets (e.g. switched power strip). Electronics draw electricity even when turned off and oftentimes end up drawing more electricity during their life while turned off then when actually being used.

Incandescent bulbs are highly inefficient and waste 90% of the electricity they consume. Using compact florescent lights instead of incandescent bulbs can reduce the electrical consumption of a light fixture by 70% for the same amount of light output. Simply changing out one's lights with CFLs can result in a very significant savings of money with the CFLs paying for their up front expense in only a few months. At the same time if lots of people swapped out their lights it could result in a very significant reduction in energy consumption nationwide. This in turn could reduce the need to build new power plants and greatly reduce the amount of pollution emitted in the process of generating electricity.

To really save the planet, one needs to start in their own community and make changes in their own home. Forcing changes in another country (e.g. Brazil) without making changes in one's own life and community is hypocritical and an example of something called "NIMBY" (not in my back yard).

I've written and published extensively on these and related subjects on my website EnvironmentalChemistry.com. Here are a select few:

You'll notice one common theme throughout the articles listed above, which is that there are many things you can do to save the planet that start at home and the way you lead your life. These aren't intangible or lofty social political changes that require protest marches. These are simple every day things that anyone can do and will have a more immediate impact than trying to force change through a political process.
