I am using 1&1 and I can get up to 50 databases on the package, but they have 100MB limits. Is this too small for implementing the features above. I would use a separate db for each, but would rather find a different host if these are going to be too small. Of course it's dependent on traffic - currently I have around 30,000 uniques a month. Is there a good rule of thumb for the size of db for forums, social networking, dating, classifieds?
I have about 820 mysql database from scripts i use and have alot of forums and 13 dating websites installed i have used just 260mb so it should not be a problem.
I am limited to 50 db, but I could consolidate and tag tables to consolidate data. If I read your post correctly, you're saying that you have over 800 db, but use less than 300MB. Theoretically, I have access to 50 * 100MB = 5GB of data storage, but I might have to get creative as to where I put it.
My database which runs 2 forums and 2 sites is about 250MB big. I find it quite small, but you can start with it and move later. It's surely good for a few months at least.
It depends ofcourse. For starting it is fine, but moving 100mb db is not fun, so if possible start out right away with more. I have a dating site (1 site) which has a 3+ gb db for instance.
I agree not a fun think to do many places give you unlimited hosting i use this place 600GB Space 60000GB Bandwidth Unlimited domains Unlimited subs unlimited mysql databases 24 hour support via liveperson online support they even move your website/s free lol just $7.99 pm not bad lol
I know HG is very popular here ; I am not really a big fan though. You need to understand that they need to make money with something; they can give away unlimited this and unlimited that (I mean; 6 TB bandwidth is unlimited for that price, as is 600 gb disk), but you need to think; where are they making money. The math is simple; even with a huge set-up, you cannot offer that for that price. This is exactly why, if you site really starts making traffic, they will switch off your account and tell you to get a dedicated server. They will tell you 'the cpu on the shared server was utilized too much'. If someone has different experiences then I am interested to hear, but please; real experiences of a site taking 'off' on such an account, as 'HG is really good' with a non-traffic site (which is not what we are talking about here) is not interesting. Personally I switched to dedicated servers only at gnulinux.nl and softlayer.com ; I never looked back; you get exactly what you pay for; no surprises.
Well interesting ive been with hostgator for 4 years now and started when you got i think it was 10GB Then 100GB Then 600GB i actually now have 1200Gb as i have streaming movie websites and websites that host big files i have used about 1000GB as of now in the hosting and have hundreds of mysql database i have total unique visitors on all sites of 300,000 per month and bandwidth is very high but they have never terminated me its i find people that just sell hosting through ebay and stuff and not good packages or unlimited hosting for very cheap disapeer after 1 week take my word if you want but i say HG is the best site for hosting.
You have a shared server package? Because I have seen many people that got banned by HG because of overuse, while they were, according to the shared package they had, not overusing. And these complaints were removed from the HG forums by HG. Maybe my friends just had bad experiences, that can be. And I don't own a paid hosting company, so I have no interest in bashing HG or any other. But I have seen more bad (real life) experiences with them than good. Yours sounds very good though; what package do you have? Because the $8 package seems not sustainable for a 'real' company; if all $8 people would use the max, HG would go broke I would say; it is overselling. Another thing that happens often (not only with HG but with others too) is that, when a story gets posted on, say, Digg.com, you get the nice Hostgator page saying that the user has overused and he should contact HG about it. No way someone used 6 TB by being on the frontpage of Digg. And still they disable your account. But maybe these are exception. To stay a bit on topic here If the experiences of a lot of people are good for HG, then by all means that THAT package instead of the 100 gb you have now. Because 600 gb/6000 gb will surely tie you over for a long time.
Yes shared but custom via HG sales $19P/M below this comment im gonna post my convo i had over this with HG as i was a bit over it and its too big to post in this post so read below comment but aslong as my sites are hosted thats all im botherd about.
My convo ::::::::::::::::::::::: ::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::: ::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::: ::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::: Hostgater:If too many system resources are used in any 90 second period which causes everyone elses account to slow down we will for the better good of everyone on the server suspend the account. We do not just suspend an account for any reason. We look out for everyones good as a whole. This is what people do not understand many times. Me:If you suspended me for instance does this mean allmy work and content is gone and what resorces as it does state we have whats on the page if you could let me know exactly what would make this happen so i never do it myself. Hostgator:No the content is still there. Me:What do you actually mean by too many system resources Hostgator:What I am saying basically is, as long as your site will not bring down the server or slow down everyone elses site on the server then it is fine. A server that has different accounts on it can only handle so many processes in a given period of time. When it is spread out over time its not a problem But a server can only do so much at any given moment. It is when someone puts a heavy strain on that that we have to take action. Me:So does this mean addon domains and such Hostgator:This means anything that is hording the resources of the server PC over a period of time without let up I am sure you would not want to be having a slow website that can barely load up. But it is possible for this to happen if someone else is abusing the system. Which mean we would take action to get you and everyone else back up to speed where you should be Me:Yes i agree with that its just i have a few website hosted under one account and also quite a few subdomains and mysql database would this make a problem? Hostgator:Only if they are using up too many resources. If you were to get 10000 visits in a 1 minute period this would not be feasible. This is an example Me:Or well i wont get that i get less than than a day so this will not be a problem for me then. Id like that many visits but not if it would stop my hosting thank you for the reasurance. Hostgator:Sure,I hope this gives you a better understanding. We have no intention of suspending just to do so,We are looking out for everyone. Me:Thank you good bye. Hostgator:Sure bye then.
Yes, that is the reason they suspend accounts over. And, in my humble experience, a resource intensive site (which I would call a 600 gb /6000 gb site) would top that CPU figure often problably. So they can allow you these large resources as they will block you for other reasons when your site gets popular. Don't get me wrong; it is logical that they do so; anyone would do so. But for the sake of the original poster (who might not even be reading this anymore I would not take the risk; downtime for a 'suspended account' is not very nice for a start-up company.
