1000 out of 2400 pages suddenly de-indexed?

Anyone have any guesses as to what is going on here..

I have a 4 month old site that has roughly 2400 pages of unique content, this content was uploaded at a rate of about 30 pages per day.. it only has about 40 inbound links as I am taking my time and building carefully.. now suddenly in the last 2 days about 1000 pages seem to have been de-indexed... now the pages that are left rank well and are no different in quality to the pages that have dissapeared from Google...

Has anyone else seen such a thing with their sites? If the site was being penalized would you think they would have simply de-indexed all pages at one time... I am hoping this is a Google tremour that will soon be over and all will return to normal..

    Regards David

Yes, this happens sometimes. Don't worry. Keep working on your site as usually and in a few weeks all your pages will be back in the index.

    Thanks Zexy,,

I am used to this happening with blocks of 100 pages or so but never a mass of 1000 pages.... it is quite alarming when something like that happens..

    Many thanks ... David

Google has both a main index and a supplemental index. When people search Google, Google first checks the main index, then resorts to the supplemental index. Pages with low PR often end up in the supplemental index. This isn't a disastrous thing. Keep building links, especially to some of your internal pages, and those pages will have a good chance of moving back to the main index. This has just happened now as Google just updated PR across many websites. In the first 4 months of your website being up, Google gave it a 'free pass' to have most or all of your pages in the main index.

Since you say your rankings are still fine, do not worry about this. The pages that were moved from the main index probably wouldn't have got any good rankings anyway.

    Hi Vansterdam,

The worrying thing is the pages that are missing were getting top ten rankings, in fact most pages top 2-3 , you see they were all targetted at a service in specific localities... that is what was worrying me.. they were no different in rankings and quality than the remaining pages...

I guess I will have to be patient and see what happens....

    Thanks for the input...

    Regards David

I have experience also, but losing PR. Nothing to do but google making correction and now PR is back.
As long as you are in the right track, don't worry.

Weird - I could have posted that almost..

I had 600 pages of 1500 just drop right out about 2 weeks ago. I was quite perturbed. Then suddenly they came back, plus 500 that were not indexed like 4 days ago...so hopefully same happens with you :)
