Cheers for the many useful link building tips on your blog! After reading your tips, I have some questions and most of them boil down to the same: what is the purpose of these links? Are they only used to drive a lot of traffic to your website for a brief or extended period of time and does the traffic from such websites convert well?

I can imagine that websites such as CSS galleries such as Freelance Switch and Cool Site of the Day send thousands of visitors to your website, but is that traffic constant or does it die out quickly so that after a week or so you'll only receive perhaps a few dozen visitors per day?

The under-the-radar links from Flickr are very clever. They're very subtle, contrary to many of the boldly advertised links you mostly see a.k.a. link spamming in comments. Creating an image contest is also a clever thing to do. Would such a link really drive a lot of traffic to your website given that Flickr hosts millions of images and this link is in one of the many comments?

Distributing a free ebook (obviously containing a link to your website) is a nice way of getting primary traffic (from people downloading that ebook) and secondary traffic (from people clicking on the hyperlinks in your ebook).

Similarly, custom Wordpress templates on your website must be an absolute goldmine with Wordpress being so popular these days. Is the influx of visitors more constant than from a link on a “website of the day” type of website?

How difficult is it to get a backlink from YouTube for being one of the top 5 websites that sends traffic to YouTube for a specific video? Is it possible to pull the same trick with YouTube as the one that can be pulled with Flickr?

How much effort and time does one need to put in becoming (and staying) a top commentator on one of those popular websites, such as JohnChow.com, to be finally awarded with a backlink? Aren't there better and easier ways to get traffic? Certainly one of those tutorial websites or becoming a “valuable contributor of the community” on Wiki-websites is much easier and less time-consuming than becoming a top commentator on a popular blog, or isn't it?

I am surprised that you have not mentioned the use of links in comments on blogs, except for the under-the-radar links from Flickr. Most of the blogs are “flooded” with link spammers whose only purpose of their comments is to post a link to their website. Even your blog contains some spammy links in the comments as well.
