When you join websites such as Digg and bookmark internet resources such as websites, these resources are stored on the website's computer and are accessible to all the members of the website.

They then rate the website you have bookmarked and post comments about it. It is a way to share information you find interesting with friends and family.

Webmasters often use these resources to bookmark their websites which gives them free exposure to the members of the social bookmark network. Additionally, it also provides them with backlinks which helps increase the webmaster's website's rank. Hope that helps!

    Thanks for the list.

Do you think it is better to concentrate on getting a lot of your pages linked on a handful of sites, or to get a few URLs on each of all of the sites?

1.Its similar to the bookmarking feature provided by the browser, with some additions.
2.SB is a way to be able to access the pages you liked from anywhere(unlike the bookmarks in our browser).
3.The sites offering this provide us with various options than just bookmarking:
    a. To create a public profile.
    b. To make the list of the bookmarks Public/Private.
    c. To make friends and increase our network.
    d. To be able to create and join existing groups.
    e. To be able to search for members and sites of our own interest.
    f. To be able to give points(usually refered to as Diggs, Stumbles, Votes in other threads) to the sites listed.
4.The more the number of points, the better attention, the site gets. A site with high points is recommended to be viewed by the site managers to other users.

If this does not help, then pm me for more queries.

SB sites are no follow. This is to prevent scamming. Webmasters can use this service as a free marketing source for their site which might generate traffic. Thats my view. Correct me if i am wrong. At least true for StumbleUpon.

    :)

Oh yes she is right. More and more social bookmarking websites are now adding the rel="nofollow" to links so they won't count as backlinks. My bad. I guess they are best for traffic.
