    System Configuration:
    Win XP Service Pack 3
    1 GB RAM

For last couple of days Memory usage of certain processes(like Skype,Firefox etc.) has gone way too high and (99-100)% CPU usage is shown in the task manager.

Owing to this Computer has turned extremely sluggish and mouse freezes whenever I try opening an application.

Would really appreciate any help in this regard.

I guess you are using lot of programs. You didn't mention your processor name here. AMD or dual core processor would be good. If you want to run many applications, I would suggest you to increase your RAM to 2GB.

Download CCleaner (I can't post links, so google it) and run it. Then go to Tools > Start Up and umark everything you don't use. That should help a ton. Restart afterwards.

The processor's name is AMD Sempron91.6 GHz). I am thinking of an upgrade of RAM. Let me know, if anything is possible with the current configuration.

I am using CCleaner(formerly known as Crap Cleaner) for past 2 years and it was of no help in this regard. If you can suggest me with any more idea, let me know.

Uninstall all the programs you do not use from control panel
download and run as many free registry cleaners as you can find
Check your hard drive space, if its more than 3/4 full get rid of videos and music files
    Download and run Malawarebytes
    Do a full virus scan
Find the windows folder that is full of pnf files and see how many are there, could be 1000's
Defragment your hard drive using windows defrag, run the clean up tool too
Get rid of all the clutter from your desktop interface
See if there is any improvement, if not backup your files and format you C:/ drive
or buy some cleanup software program

I have the same problem on ALL 4 of my pc's. Only seems to happen when searching eBay. If I get 200 results to a search it is impossible to scroll down the list and the cpu usage is 100%. Changing the number of results to 25 per page makes it very slightly better but still if I press the 'page down' key it hangs for about 20 seconds and scrolls down when the CPU usage drops for a fraction of a second.

If I leave a tab open with a page of eBay search results I can’t browse any other sites as the whole thing runs slow. I keep the task manager running in the background and the box in the taskbar is solid green almost all the time

It has done this for about 3 months now and at first I thought I had picked something up but running full virus check, ad-aware etc made no difference.

So I wiped my lappy completely and re-formatted and re-installed XP and ie8. Expecting super fast searching - NO DIFFERANCE

Does anybody know what’s causing this as it’s driving me mad and searching eBay is unusable?
