People are always asking to see sites that make a lot of money off Adsense. Most think the $10,000 range is the ultimate achievment. Topix.net was started in Jan 2004. It's basically a couple of guys that run the site. They made $1,000,000 off adsense last year. That number is almost certainly higher now. Perhaps double that. They get about 2 million unique visitors per month now and I think it's still only run by these 2 guys. They don't generate any unique content. They just aggregate everything. Not bad for a site that's less than 2 years old.
Wow! I see that they have something like 500.000 visits a day!!!! I had never heard of them, but $1,000,000 a year! WOW! I would be more than happy with 5% of that using adsense!
Exactly. I've always said: give me a site with good traffic and I will turn it into gold... I have found themes where the ads are paying 10 bucks. If I could get decent traffic to that site I would be right now sipping a drink at Hawaii.
Yeah, sure... just what I want, 5000 new websites out there by tomorrow... Takes a lot of work to find these niches.... but you'd be amazed of what you can find, I have found all kind of crazy themes where the ads pay one or two bucks and there really isin't much competition. The problem is that most people just follow the crowd and build sites about mesothelioma or asbestos and are too lazy to use all the tools out there to find those nice, well-payed niches
I've never viewed that as a problem The problem is when people start getting creative it makes it that much harder for the rest of us
Yeah, I thought exactly the same thing and was going to edit my post... oh, well, I agree with you, couldn't be happier with my little niches
Could you tell me where you find these tools? All I keep comming up with is "buy my ebook" sites. Thanks J
Not really tools... I just browse around thinking about possible themes, then I gather keywords related to those themes. Then I go to overture and check each keyword's popularity, no use on optimizing for a keyword no one uses, then I check those keywords at google to see how many results it brings and how well optimized the other sites are. Takes a long time, but it is worth it.
Where did you get that information from? According to this article their revenue last year was $1,000,000. They do use AdSense on their site, but the also have lots of other ads. Ads that are sold directly typically have higher rates than CPC programs, so I'm sure much of their on-site ad revenue was not AdSense. Also, over half of their traffic is off-site via RSS feeds. They sold ads in the RSS feeds. They also make money by selling 'Featured Placement' slots on their pages. So their AdSense revenue is surely well below the million dollar mark. I think its a bit bigger than 2 guys. The article says "They do have plans to move to a new location across town with 10,000 square feet of office space." It's not a huge company, but you don't need 10,000 sq. ft. for two guys. Don't get me wrong, i don't want to put a damper on things and I think AdSense is a great program, I just wanted to do some fact-checking here. When people post stuff like this, how about including the source of the information so people can check it out for themselves.
Thanks Fryman, I appreciate the time you took to answer. I was just looking at Wordtracker, maybe someday. I will start with how you do it..... hitting gold that way seems like it would be very satisfying since you did the due diligence yourself. Thanks J
Their business model has changed recentely because some large media sites have bought 75% of their company. But these guys were running the site on Adsense only last year and the company I worked for was in talks with them. They were just a couple of guys making a boat load of moolah off Adsense.
hmm fryman, I read all your post's What theme do you suggest for Entertainment related site to get more clicks, the site gets 2000, unique visitors a day, and more than 10000 page views! Thanks!
