I'm not sure about #8, everybody says word of mouth advertising is great but think about it, you can only tell so many people.

Word of mouth can work wonders for websites. It just depends on the site and the site topic. I have a local site that I run called http://www.overheardinvancouver.ca, and get a lot of traffic from Google from people searching "Overheard in Vancouver", the only way so many people would think to Google that is because of word of mouth.

I have actually been walking down the street and heard someone say "You should send that into Overheard in Vancouver" before. I just smiled and kept walking.

Just remember if it is a site worth talking about people will. News can travel fast especially on the internet.

Word of mouth has almost nothing to do with you telling people about your website. You can tell people until you're blue in the face, and it won't do all that much. The key is getting clients or visitors to spread the word for you. I run a music webzine. I tell people about it everywhere. That doesn't really matter. But it's amazing how musicians and fans from all over the world (including some larger independent record labels) have been contacting me on their own the last few months saying they heard about my site from a friend. That's the best kind of marketing. As another example, I run a small PR firm, and do a good deal of press release writing. Things had gotten slow on that front (not the only kind of work I do though), until I picked up a client here on DP. After a few releases were done for him, he had started spreading the word right here, and business has picked up 10-fold. Because clients are finding me on their own now from other client referrals and such, it means I can spend much less time marketing my company, and now am able to bill out more than the average 22-23 hours per week. It's the best kind of marketing, because it's completely hands off.

So yes, #8 was on the right track, but not quite. The key is making your clients (or in this case visitors) happy. Then they'll promote your website more than you could ever hope to.

Thanks, but I'd like to refine the 10 ways:

10 ways to promote your website
    1. Post newsgroups - Probably wouldn't do this, is considered Spamming

    2. Press releases - Needs to be a defined and targetted PR. Also timing is everything, is your website/company relates to something that's being currently talked about, then that's the time to release it.

    3. Email to VIPs - No need. I'd say email to your related contacts or perhaps flyers/brochures can be sent out to clients with your web details on.

    4. Article submission - Is useful. Same goes for posting your URL on related blogs.

    5. Reciprocal Links - As long as they relate to your site. I think Reciprocal links are too much trouble to handle, chasing up link swaps, checking they are still live etc.,

    6. Forum Posting - A signature at the bottom of your post is enough if Forums allow it.

    7. Directory submission - I would mainly stick to the big guns - Google, Yahoo, MSN and Dmoz. Dmoz is the most worthwhile due to the huge number of backlinks.

    8. Tell everyone with whom you communicate - ???

    9. Post ads to free advertising website - I'd go along with buying ads on Adwords or Adbrite, Adbrite is especially cheap.

    10. Blogging - I'd recommend having a blog section on your site. It can be like a What's New section. You can also submit your RSS feeds to Feed Carriers which helps with the hits.

True. not many practical choices. I will focus on the search engine, that has long lasting effect.

posting in r-fd.com gets a lot of traffic or posting in forums..or let me say advertising on paid website but very cheap..i think spending 7 dollars on a website is good for a feature links..isn't it. Fiver person bought feature links on r-fd.com(check out the alexa rank for today 16,000 with 50 people) and they are listed in top links because so much people click on it. So if you want to get a lot of good traffic then buy a feature link at r-fd.com or post in forums.yes..sorry about the advertising

#8 work fine for newly introduced sites. I used #8 to find first 60 registered users for my site. Sometimes thats avery effective way to promote some unique sites.

It is a very basic list.

misohoni, you did a nice job expanding the list.

#5 I disagree with. Reciprical links are good, one way links are better. Link popularity is very important, but can be time consuming and troublesome at times it is necessary. This is best outsourced to a company that can automate it though, once the funds are available. It's really a good value to have one way links from relevant sites.

#8 Telling people is fine, but if you simply tell people you communicate with you'll probably get a lot of friends and family looking at your site once then forgetting about it. Getting others to buzz about your site is where it's at. I'd change this to, tell everyone who may care and bring you business or help spread the word ;)
