I was under the impression I didn't have the ability to post a URL and was also worried about getting pegged as a spammer... Here are my URLs

    digiumcards.com
    8774e4voip.com
    asteriskarmy.org
    e4voip.com

    Niche is VoIP :)

You can post URL's as long as they are relevant to the topic. You won't be able to put Hyperlinks in your post until you have made a certain number of posts.

yeah that is the other part of it. You have to have positive rep before you can do hyperlinks. Say for instance if I made a post *hint, hint* that was helpful to you, you click on the rep button on my post to give me positive rep. If on the other hand I was spamming your thread or something worse, you could still give me rep, but negative rep which would take away from my current rep. Just to help you out, I'll give you positive rep.

Just to stay on topic: you can also create backlinks to your site by signing up for a lot of forums that are related to your site, and including your website in your signature. It is a strategy I am using on some of the forums I am a member of. In addition to that you can make comments on blogs of the same nature, and leave your site in your signature. I think this also increases your google ranking, by having similar sites linked back to you. Stay away from link exchanges though.

    JJP-
Do you mean link Directories? Or exchanging links with other webmasters?

A little of both. The first is the kind that are setup as membership sites where they are overloaded with exchanged links. That is the kind to definitely avoid. The webmasters option is not as a bad, but I think google tends to frown on this, unless the 2 sites with links exchanged are very relevant to each other. Your best option is blogs, forums, etc. This way its not just a site that is setup for the sole purpose of exchanging links.

Why do you suggest to stay away from link exchanges? I think that most of the websites use this way to get backlinks.

Google places little value on sites that do this because it is more or less generic paid traffic that usually is coming from countries that could care less about the content of the page... they are just trying to get their credits. Basically Google doesn't like this type of traffic, because it is over used. So they don't delist the site or anything drastic like that, but they place a lower value on the site, thus putting it lower in the search engine rankings. If you exchanging links with someone for the sole purpose of exchanging links, that is fine, but if you do it with a site that advertises the link exchange then that is when Google would place a lower value on it.

As for getting the visitors... I would much rather have 1000 visitors per day that were qualified legit traffic, than 100,000 hits per day that were just using up my bandwidth downloading pages, not caring what was on them. There are sites that give you good, qualified, legit traffic... but it usually costs around $20-$30 per 10,000 uniques.

I would start out by writing articles and submitting to article submission engines.

Of course, your article has to be relevant to your site topic. In your article signature, make sure you include a link back to your site.

Also, keep a site link in your forum signatures.

Google for sites within your niche, find 50 sites per day, use their contact form to contact them and ask for a link exchange.

These are just some suggestions, I am sure there are tons of other ways.
