We all know that Google (and other search engines) like to find backlinks in various types of site. I thought I'd make a list of ten, hope you find it useful.

    1. Article Directories
    2. Social Networking Sites
    3. .EDU/.GOV Sites
    4. Directories
    5. Sites with related content
    6. High ranking page sites
    7. Squidoo
    8. Blogs
    9. Forums
    10. Wiki

Please add anything I've missed below.

    Hope this is useful.

    Steve

Most social networking sites are nofollow, - so is wikipedia and apart from dmoz, yahoo and a couple of specialist directories, google has stopped recommending directory submissions, forums are low quality links, and they've warned against blog spam.

high PR and high quality blogs will also provide some nice backlink juices, you must spend time looking for them though and communicating with the site owners.

I have read some places that NoFollow links can actually be quite useful for Google search results. As alluded to, it's always tricky to tell unless you have done the research yourself (or you trust someone else who has!).

The .edu and .gov are usually great links to pick up because they are usually from strong domains and have a lot of trust.

Social media links at present are sort of the outlier, but I think they will have to be incorporated into Google (and Yahoo and Bing)'s algorithims because it is nearly impossible to attract any "genuine" links anymore as a result of social media and "nofollow" links. I would be shocked if Google will make any sort of announcement about this but I suspect it will be an element sooner rather than later.
