Yeah I agree, but do the now owners of sex.com really think they can make up the 12.whatever million USD they spent on it?

Sure, they'll sell it to the next sucker for $20 million :)

When you consider the type-in traffic from a domain like that they probably can get a over a million a year in revenue from it anyways so it's not that crazy.

You know, if you put it that way it actually makes sense.

How much money is there in buying and selling domains? I know for big domains like this there is a bunch, but what about domain names that aren't taken yet? You think anyone would ever pay any real money for them?

    It happens all the time!
Maybe not selling for mega money like the domains you mentioned, but people are constantly selling freshly registered domains...if they are good, and if they can find the right market/buyer. (present company included ;))

there are few more sales which is not in the list

fund.com - $50 less $1M (i guess would be some VAT issue or something as they didnt agree at $1M, any idea) - 2008/03 at monkier
    beer.com - $7M - 2004 - private sale
    shop.com - $3.5M - 2003/11 - private sale

There are still alot of really, really nice single keyword domain names for sale that might get alot more once they eventually sell. We will have to wait and see. :)

Yes, there are always new words being invented and new extensions being released.
