Google basically operates with a "you need us, we don't need you" attitude. They don't really care about their customers (unless you are a huge spender) because they know they are the biggest in their industry right now so people are going to use them regardless.

I stopped my ads campaign, notwithstanding the fact that Adwords is quite effective, the increasing prices really leave no room for a sustainable and reasonable ROI. For me I returned to the traditional method of newspapers adverts.

I had the same issue with one of my clients over the past week - I actually got hit twice. Bumped me from $0.03 min CPC up to $10.00 overnight. Fun.

First time I fixed the problem by changing my "direct marketing" sales pages to contain links to "additional resources (i.e links)" - hurt my conversion rates BUT I got my min CPC's back within 48 hours. I was fine with that - figured I would just work on testing new LP's to get the conversion rate back up.

But a day later I got hit again. This time I was totally confused - I mean, the slap for the "direct marketing" type landing page I understood as Adwords works aggressively to prevent these types of LP's. But the second slap had me crossed up.

After a lot of back-and-forth with my Adwords rep., it turns out that the second slap (which drove my CPC's all the way up to $10.00 again) had nothing to do with my LP's... it was 100% do to their review of my index (homepage). Even though this page wasn't being used in my PPC ads, they were using information from non-PPC pages to determine my PPC quality score.

This might not be shocking to most people but it blew me away. I have fundamentally kept these two worlds separate and was a bit displeased with this answer.

I fixed up the index page (per Goog's quality score, webmaster guidelines and my rep.'s suggestions) and within 24 hours my min CPC's were back at $0.03.

I don't know if this is the same thing that is happening to everyone else... but I thought I would pass it along. I also don't think it's a GOOD answer - as a result of all these changes (to get my min CPC back down) my conversion rate has gone to crap and my margins are lower than they have been in 18 months.

Was Google doing a manual (human) review of your home page? How are we supposed to know what to correct on our sites if they're using non-PPC pages in their "quality score"?

This is blowing me away. Google is starting to irritate me...

Can you share how you fixed up your pages?

This demonstates that it is worth having your webmaster follow the Google Webmaster Guidelines for any landing page that you are optimising for the Google search engine.

    @ msavage

... possibly. My rep. asked some of the quality score specialists and then came back to me with an answer.

Sure. Original index page looked like doubleyourdating.com/00000/ and now it looks like doubleyourdating.com. The LP's were changed from something that looked like the first link to doubleyourdating.com/m/ppc/index_catalog.asp

... again, I don't know if this is the same thing that is happening to everyone. Just know what happened to me and it happened at the same time and this is how I fixed it. Hopefully it will help someone else.

Just curious if Google pays the publisher more when they charge $10 for these ad? Or do the simply keep the extra profit?

I've been using Adsense for three years now and have sites in numerous niches and I've never seen a click above $2, even in my most lucrative niches.
