Five Tips to Maximize Your Next Telemarketing Campaign

When most consumers hear the word telemarketing, the ensuing thoughts are often not pleasant. However, for companies who use this advertising strategy to make sales, it still continues to be highly effective. Due to the recent law changes in the industry, namely the ability for individuals to place their names on a national “no call” list, telemarketing companies have had to change their strategy a bit. They now have to create more sales with less prospects.

There is no longer the option of casting a wide net and hoping that if your company calls enough people than someone will eventually want what you are selling. Today, telemarketing is much more targeted and focused, which isn’t necessarily a bad thing. Laws dictate that telemarketing companies can only solicit individuals who have not placed their name on the “National No Call” list and to individuals that have already purchased a product or service from their company.

Telemarketing has in the last two decades become somewhat of an embattled industry. However, not only has it managed to survive, but impressively, continues to be a billion dollar industry. Telemarketing companies have had to re-train their salespersons to maximize sales even when working from a smaller prospect base. In this article, we will discuss methods to help a company increase the success of any telemarketing campaign.

    1. Plan For the Call: A lot of the work that goes into a telemarketing phone call takes place before the call is even made. Consider the following: What is the objective of the call? What do you want to see happen? Do you want to close the sale, get permission to send more information, or contact the decision maker? Answer these questions before the phone call so that you can control the direction of the call.

    2. Create a Great Opening Statement: Having a prepared, hard hitting opening statement, will give you confidence. This opening statement should get the target interested and curious in how you can help their business.

    3. Ask Questions: Asking good questions pulls the target in because the call becomes about them and how you can meet their needs and not about you and what your company is selling. Asking questions will also enable you to find out exactly what your target wants, so that you can craft an offer that specifically meets their needs. If you listen carefully and ask the right questions, they will eventually tell you exactly what they want.

    4. Avoid Getting Defensive: Every telemarketer will face objections. How a telemarketer deals with these objections will either lead to a very short phone call or will open up new avenues of discussion. Instead of becoming defensive, the telemarketer should instead ask more questions and try to get at the heart of the objection.

    5. Be Self Motivated: Telemarketing is one of the toughest office jobs on the planet. Attempting to sell things over the phone, to individuals who have not already expressed interest and who are often hostile, is difficult. Telemarketers must be resilient and self motivated. Self motivation, even more than money, will enable one to pick up the phone and try over and over to close a sale or generate a lead.

There you have it, five simple tips to help ensure the success of your next telemarketing campaign. Remember to remind your employees to plan for the call, create a great opening statement, ask questions, avoid getting defensive and to stay self-motivated. These five effective guidelines, when followed, should result in more sales and business for your company.
