I never really used this for my site, but badges work. A badge saying something like what I uploaded below. A script link bait for that matter.
The badges primarily are the link baits. A script like what google uses to advertise their products (e.g. adsense, adwords, firefox) and what WC3 uses (css validated, xhtml validated, etc) is used to redirect to your site. The badge can be of different meaning and not everyone can make one for their site. You can either put in whatever you want. say like "100% search engine optimized" or "bes viewed with a 24" LCD" or something. Just some ideas.
Somehow get a ton of traffic from the social networking sites and then write about how to you did it. Of course you'll need to come up with some great content in the first place ;-)
Target Google Write quality resource full posts which google would love like say - Step by Step or Day by Day Guide To Increase Traffic (in those posts write exactly what u did in first day what in second day..record traffics in these days and finally...good traffic ) These type of posts rank high on google... Also provide resources on your post.....like 20 Must Have Plugins For A Successful Wordpress Blog there u may cite other sites as examples.... 50 Seo Tools At Your hand Google loves quality of content and their likelihood by users....and also high PR too so consider paying for getting backlinks that was google specific traffic..once or twice u get top seat at google search then your seo site'll be popular......and always do good Social Bookmarking At least promote thee articles in Digg and other places where voting is done. Ask others to save your articles to bookmarking sites. As i mentioned if your post will have more resource,,,,more is the %of it being bookmarked....

This is a good idea but I am looking for something which will create a buzz, sort of make people talk about it, digg it etc. Its a nice idea to get links but it would not really create a buzz.
It is simpel to check yourself but I still think many people would like a "dropped domain" check script. A simple script that tells you if the url that people are selling links on etc has dropped recently. Could be good since the PR often validates on newly dropped domains which can be missleading. I might use it myself as I am lazy and it might be easier than to check whois oneself.
People love case studies. Create a new domain and show how you've managed to get lots of keywords into the Google SERPS. A bit like Colin with crediteria.com
Attempt to rank #1 in some very competitive keyword in 2 months or something. Another idea is to attempt getting 100,000 backlinks in a month.
Getting 100,000 backlinks in 1 month is easy but it would surely get the website I got those links for, sandboxed in the SE's for a six months to a year. I can attempt to rank for a competitive keyword but how would that be a linkbait?
After having read the discussion on johnchow.com about how Cash Quests no longer accepts comments on the blog, maybe you want to try out some things which people would love to do but don't have the confidence. Then report on your findings. Some ideas: Delete all your link exchange pages Remove all in-bound paid-for links Add no-follow to all outbound links Is there anything else people would love to experiment with but are too scared?
