I started by using Link directories and they are downright useless. So scratch that off of your list.

However, press releases and article submissions work good. Forums can work, but it is important to find forums related to the topic of your site. For example, if your site is about pet care, you should find forums that are about animals.

Another good way to get backlinks is by doing testimonials for companies that you use and asking them to put the testimonial with a link on your site.

Buying text links is an option and to my knowledge still works on most sites despite what has been in the news lately about Google and paid text link ads. I would only use this as a temporary measure until you can build links yourself though.

    1. write good content
    2. visit other blogs and post comment related to their article
    3. write articles and get it published to articles directory
    4. optimize your website for better SEO so more peoples will come to your website and will linkback to you
    5. ask them to linkback to your website if they found your website is interesting

I like to make a video, submit to Youtube, promote it heavily in first two days.

    A) Youtube spiders grab the video.
    B) The sites spider grab your description and title.
    C) A URL placed in title/description is then placed on over 2000+ Youtube related sites.

What sites are crawling and using the spider to grab videos ?

    Auto Updating Blogs.
    Auto updating Video sites.
    Youtube Clones.
    Galleries / hosts.

I usually get 2000+ links to my videos (and title with URL is present on most) within 2 days, the impact in search engines can vary, links and traffic are usually type ins, but this is working for me.

Sounds like you were using the free ones. There are many very good directory resources, just remember that as most things in life you get what you pay for.

Don't expect to drive a BMW for nothing. ;)

I have had lots of luck with #3 and #4, but I have never tried 1 and 2. does article submission reall work? would it work for a popular blog in say, the travel niche? I always thought that article submission was more for business/self help kind of sites.

This sounds interesting, Youtube is nofollow though, how about all the :

    Auto Updating Blogs.
    Auto updating Video sites.
    Youtube Clones.
    Galleries / hosts.

I wonder how many of them are dofollow...

Link baiting is one of the best ways. Submitting to social bookmark sites with traffic & commenting on related blogs (not commenting for the sole purpose of a backlink) will attract attention to your site from others who share the same interest, eventually leading to backlinks.

Yes you are correct, some links wont even be clickable, this is more branding your URL/Site around, and to create type ins - if people like your video content and you can create some interest then the visitors will copy paste the URL into browser. Like me though you can brand the video with your URL aswell.

Same for me, many of my customers only measure the results by hits sent from Youtube, I always try to stress that 99% of clicks or traffic sent are from other sites and direct type ins - also that this is a not an instant traffic splurge. Many of my customers try one video and think the results weren't good enough for another promo'. In my experience it pays to keep pumping out videos - I look at it like an ad' on TV where you keep in the users face and brand you URL, Slogan and Brand Image.
