Hey everyone... I learned something very interesting the other day regarding google crawls (and other search engine spiders and crawlers). Let's say that you want your home page indexed as high as possible in google (or any others for that matter.) Now lets say that of course you have a "contact page" or "privacy policy" or "blah-blah-blah" page that you don't care if it gets indexed... I have some links on my page... but I Want google crawlers/spider/bots to focus solely on my home page, and maybe 1 or 2 other pages that I have linked on my site... I mean really you want your Home page to be indexed as high as possible right? So... Here's a little bit of coding that will STOP google spiders from loosing focus on your page and moving on to the next link before it gets done with your home page... Put THIS "attribute code" inside your link code to Stop google crawlers from moving on from your home page into that links webpage... rel="nofollow" The way that would look in your text link... Your home page link: <a rel="nofollow" href="http://www.whateversite.com">whatever site</a> Google spiders will continue analyzing the rest of your site without moving on into that links webpage... But only use it on links you are not wanting google to analyze. If you have any other tips for search engine optimization please let us all know! I enjoy using this search engine optimization tool free of charge: seocentro.com/tools/search-engines/metatag-analyzer.html Hope this helps!! Dan http://www.tonsoftraffic.us
I'm sure there are lots of people who know about it... but wanted to get some more feed back from others on search engine optimization formulas.
It's called PageRank sculpting, and it was very fashionable a couple of years ago - right up to the point where Matt Cutt's said "Nah, don't do that" - http://www.mattcutts.com/blog/pagerank-sculpting/
I see... I just read Matt Cutts blog... very insightful Thanks for sharing! He said that only in rare cases would he use "nofollow" attribute. But for me... If I have a link on my page that goes to a completely different website other than mine... then I don't see the problem using it... I don't want google being led away when the bots are crawling thru my pages. If I am linking around my own site to different pages of my website... then I wouldn't use "nofollow" on those links. I've read that there's no real reason to have google bots go thru my "contact" or "privacy" page... I'd rather have the bots focused on my home page and other important pages.
FYI, it won't really stop Google or other search engines bot from following the link or visit the linked page/site.. Instead it will simply prevent passing link-power / PR Juice to the linked page/site using the nofollow tag
similar thing happened to me in one of my blogs where i created a link exchange page to keep all reciprocal urls..but soon found on google that while searching with the blog title..the link exchange page was getting listed..and sooner i was needed to rectify that..
i this will help lot of other newbie webmaster in getting their home page indexed. Thanks a lot for sharing.
did you seen people here talking about do follow and no follow links? I can say your complete explanation under two words that's >> "NO Follow"
Nice article, although it seems that you are a bit confuse of the use of nofollow attribute... rel=nofollow facts: 1. rel=nofollow will not stop Google spiders from crawling any link. 2. Google will not give PR weight or PR value to any link with this attribute. 3. rel=nofollow has nothing to do with Google's indexing, it was specifically invented by Google engineers to stop PR juice to follow to an unwanted or bad link. 4. You are in effect not passing PR juice to your website's homepage if you add rel=nofollow attribute to it.
Oh Ok I see what you mean... It's funny cuz I've read so many different things about the rel="nofollow" attribute... So that makes sense... if it was designed to stop PR juice to follow to an unwanted or bad link... then you can stop that juice from going into "contact" or "privacy" pages and things like that. <a rel="nofollow" href="http://www.whateversite.com/contact.htm">whatever site</a> But leave Out the nofollow attribute of the links you want it to give PR juice to... Sound reasonable??
I'm not trying to "make it out to be anything" ... I'm just lookin for feed back on this idea... some people who know SEO say "YAY" for certain reasons and certain link structure within websites that are large and authoritative ... other people who know SEO say "NAY" .... It makes sence in some ways... doesn't make sense in other ways... Just curious why either would say what they say... that's all... as I'm sure alot of other people are wondering the same... that's why I started this thread... Thanks for all the feedback... much appreciated!
Someone said it best above. I'll just add that google came up with nofollow specifically for unedited, immediate posted links, like blogs. That's it. Page sculpting for most people is unnecessary. Google is smart enough to know what is worth indexing. Crawling your main page only does not improve SERP. Unless I'm out of the loop! If only it were that easy. You want content Lots of it. You want that content on as many pages as necessary AND you want it all crawled. Whatever you don't want indexed use the robots.txt or noindex. nofollow, as someone said, has nothing to do with indexing or crawling. False advertising here. I thought I was going to learn the #1 tip! Stephen C
#1 secret to Google love??? Sorry to say, but you are wrong and 'nofollow' is noSecret! The #1 factor is high quality relevant links, and that is no secret! /*tom*/
