One of our sites sits at #1 and is making good bank. It's totally worth it.

Two sites still plugging away... I'm going to push on.

Anyone else got a #1 thats is making good bank?

Well, for my keywords, the difference is not that huge.

There is a huge difference between positions and traffic/ conversions. I have noticed this often.

Seriously? I've never been in the top 3, but I've always thought top 3-5 should get ~ the same traffic.

If people see what they are looking for - they click.

They start at #1 and work their eyes down the page.

Big difference within the top 5.

I think that a lot of this comes down to the page title you use.

For any search, one title will be more appealing to the audience...

I saw a really good thread at WMW ages ago about the most clickable title's...

I wish I could find it again because it was really worth a read.

There are some words which are known to work well - win and free are obvious, some more from the top of my mind are exposed new and reveal.

The difference between # 1 and # 7 for my key phrase is about 100,000 visitors. I can only guess what the return is on the leads in relation of # 8 and # 1 but information I got from a friend of mine who use to be number 1 he was getting about 200 to 300 email real estate leads per day verses the 40 I get now.

In the e-commerce areas I optimize for, the difference between Top 4 and the rest of the results is around $15-20k a month in sales per keyword.

some words, i've noticed that #2-3 is better than #1. Not for traffic, but for sales. Sometimes people check out #1 go to #2 or #3 to compare prices or whatever; forget all about the price at #1 and buy and #2 or #3

It must be better to be at #1 though. If you have a decent site then #1 has to be better.

lorien1973, I think you're right to a certain extent. On the other hand, I wonder what percentage of people open a new window when they click on the link... Anyone have any idea?

I read on another forum (WebmasterWorld) a while back an informal study that a pretty experienced guy did that said that each spot in the top 10 got 50% less volume than the one above it. That's pretty radical, but it wouldn't surprise me if its pretty significant.

I remember a study says that the average CTR on the first page is 4%-15%. There's a 400% traffic difference between #1 and #10

I wouldn't say that, at least not for every keyword. Some of my sites went up and down, and there were no big differences in traffic. (although I never got no 1.)

I have seen similar reports. Massive difference in traffic indeed.

I wonder how many people use the 'feeling lucky' button. i guess a fair few, else G would have discontinued it.
