Is there any pitfalls with running a proxy site?

Besides bandwidth and CPU resources, is there any legal requirements you need to look out for.

Make sure you have a TOS on your site. If you take a look at mine (http://vip-surf.in/tos.html). This will keep you out of the legal mess.

    http://proxy.icarusindie.com:2004/

It took all of about 15 minutes to set that up using PHProxy which is what it appears vip-surf.in is using.

    We'll see what happens.

There are a lot of pitfalls in running a proxy site it seems. For example:

    http://proxy.org/forum/YaBB.pl?num=1159902577

Is getting kicked out of adsense worth a few bucks?

Pretty interesting, wouldn't they be able to just spider all proxy directories and shut yours down from a school? (If the school uses such a software) it has to exist, right?

Theres no Adsense etc. Also, you might want to use a normal domain, without :2004.

    Submit yourself to proxy.org too.

I'm not going to risk getting banned from AdSense by putting ads directly on a proxy site. I'd rather leave it as is for now and see what happens and then advertise my other sites which do have adsense.

I use port 2004 sites to test out things. Unless I can guarentee income exceeding costs I'm not going to waste money paying for a domain and hosting just so I can use port 80.

My DMOZ mirror is also running on port 2004 and gets high triple digit uniques per day. It'll break 1000 today. It may seem like a limitation but it's not really.

In the last week, over 50 proxy owners have got their accounts BANNED from google and lost all their monthly earnings. There is some sort of crackdown on proxies.

Good luck keeping your google account if you do this.

Why do you think people are selling them off?

You don't need to buy a turnkey proxy site. PHProxy is freely available. All you have to do is upload the script and you're done.

Well I don't have AdSense on browsing pages, as there would be a high chance of the TOS being broken, but on the Homepage where the AdSense is placed everything is fine.

Why not hire a programmer to code a custom proxy script that parses every page requested by the user and replace all of the Adsense PUBIDs with your own... that way you'll have 700,000 adsense impressions and about $2k/day!!!!!!!!!!

    ***WARNING***

THIS IS SARCASM, PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE DON'T DO SOMETHING AS STUPID AS THIS!!!! YOU WILL GET YOURSELF IN A LOT OF TROUBLE.

    ***WARNING***

Sorry, couldn't resist... but just imagine the potential. ;)
