Most likely you will end up getting tons of spam. If someone comments to get a backlink, surely that comment is not worth anything. You will end up having tons of spam and links to sites which you wont really want to link. End result, you might be penalised by google for linking to bad neighbours.

A mixture of both, though the proportionate increase in spam will definitely be higher.

Lots of spam, but you give your regular readers incentive to comment on your blog.

I use dofollow and while I do get some spam,
I do have Akismet, Comment Timeout, and Simple Trackback Validation do their jobs to help combat the spam problem...
I also moderate my comments so I manually approve them..and less worries...
and my loyal readers get link love from me :)

I left a comment on your blog.
Ye, if you start having spam problems you can just install some captcha plugin.

keep moderation for your blog, that will help you keep away from spam and use a no nofollow badge to boost comments

I use no follow for comments and it works well for me.
I moderate all my comments and I don't hesitate to delete any comment that is not adding to the discussion.
I also use askimet and I don't have too much trouble with Spam.

Just check the links before you publish the comments. If you publish links(comments) to bad places then your are telling them that your site promotes bad sites.

I'm not sure how it works later on if a good site turns into a bad site and you still link to them.

You will get more spams but I think Akismet will be able to stop them. Good thing is that you will get more comments but you will need to tell your readers about it.

I have done the same as you.
Install a captcha plugin, it helps to verify if the one leaving a comment on your blog is a real Human or not.
