[Sample #2] North Cyprus Sea Turtles North Cyprus is home to many Chelonia mydas and Caretta caretta turtles. These fascinating animals have roamed the oceans for over one hundred million years. Sadly they only visit the shores during the summer months. During this time they usually nest near Alagadi Beach which provides them with a safe environment to live upon. The Chelonia mydas turtle is high endangered and has only three locations in the entire world for nesting. Cyprus, Israel, and southeastern Turkey are the only known nesting regions for the green turtle. While visiting North Cyprus, you will quickly find out that it is home to the majority of turtles in the Mediterranean. The green (Chelonia mydas) and loggerhead (Caretta caretta) turtles are two of the near endangered species on earth. Estimations show that only about 350 green and just under 2000 loggerhead turtles are alive each year in the entire Mediterranean Sea. North Cyprus and Turkey have came to be known as the only nesting area for these turtles choose. Over 80 beaches around North Cyprus are monitored mostly during the summer months as well for turtle activity. It is important do all you can to keep these animals alive and safe so they continue to grow in population. The lives of North Cyprus turtles start out on land as most turtles do. They stay in their eggs anywhere from 45-65 days until they are hatched and make their first attempts at conquering the ocean. They will now stay put for the rest of their lives at sea. The only time a turtle won't be at sea is if a female must lay her eggs at shore. One single hatching can have up to one hundred eggs. As studies have shown less than five of the entire hatching will live to be an adult turtle. When they reach the age of about 25 years old they will migrate off into the mediterranean to start eating and reproducing. Each female turtle can lay approximately 3 nests per nesting season .Each time the turtle lays a nest she will go to the same beach each time. Most turtles will lay nests annually but it is also common for turtles to wait up to five years before reproducing again. These turtles have one of the oldest age expectancies at up to 170 years old. So when visiting North Cyprus be sure to catch a glimpse of these amazing creatures while on the breathtaking shores. It is also very common to sight the turtles nesting at night which is an eye opening experience. If wanting to see nesting it is recommended to visit during nesting season (May-August). It's quite amazing to see how intelligent these turtles are and how well they protect their families.
