I have my own website but have never been able to place top 10 in the search engines. I have read about SEO and even tried to optimize to achieve better positioning without any results. Can anyone point me to the right direction? I really don't know what I am doing wrong. I am not a professional developer, I am self taught, but have been writing html for years. Any help will be greatly appreciated..

yes of course first show me your url. And read about SEO of course first you need SEO tutorial. Do follow all the basic seo at least means Add Meta Tags, Heading, Alt Tags in images and also do link building.

Alright guys, I was in the same boat 3 weeks ago. Now I can say I am pretty more packed with SEO luggage. In the beginning I knew barely anything about SEO and thanks to this great forum and google of course I have learned a lot. Since you are beginners use google to research the basics of SEO, and search here in this section of SEO too for seo tips, seo basics, seo tutorials etc. Trust me, if you put in the effort, you will know a lot and understand SEO in just a couple of weeks. Currently I am taking action on my own sites and I am convinced that I will succeed. Go ahead and start to read and get your site in Google rankings! Use location name in your targeted keywords. You can also set geographically target through google webmaster tools, it will help you to rank good in your targeted location.
