DMOZ is dead..... You'll only waste your time and effort worrying about getting there.. If it happens break out the bubbly....... :)

DMOZ maybe an Authority site etc etc but will it really benefit you in the end for the wondering you put in.. Doubt it!

    (Sorry for negativity...:0) )

Given that DMOZ is adding up to 8000-10000 sites a month (thats not DEAD and makes it the fastest growing directory), a lot of bubbly is going to be drunk.

Categories that appear not to have an editor will be edited by the editor of the parent category. You sometimes have step up through a handful of categories to find one, but there are editors for every category.

How do you know they are not? Why don't you download successive DMOZ rdf dumps and check the number of sites listed to verify that DMOZ is increasing by that about amount. It is very obvious that DMOZ is the fastest growing directory.

DMOZ has issues, the threads in this section of the forum is testimony to that. However I can see that people are still submitting and editors are still editing.

From viewing the "digg me", "stumble me" threads I can assure that not every site being promoted by digitalpoint members is a "quality site" and therefore some digitalpoint members will be frustrated and disappointed by their lack of inclusion.

So as a professional DMOZ Editor what advice can you give to the digital point members. Since most of us don't speak the same language. If you are saying "content" just forget it. People are in different intellectual capabalities so be specific and could you please put some content samples ?

As most webmasters here really wanted to know.

    Thanks

Considering backlog was over a million before crash 10k a month is not something to brag about since it would take about 10 years to clean it up, of course big part of these websites aren't listable but even 10% would take a year to do and with new website being created each month...

    P.S.
IIRC reports before crashed put number of new listed sites at 20k a month, if your latest info of 8-10k is correct that would mean that DMOZ production has halved!

And when Robozilla kills all the dead sites it will drop number of listed sites by at least 50,000!

I think by content they want you to take off all your cloths and create a website with your nude photos? :D

    Professional? me? I wish...

Anyway, the problem I have with so many sites is that they are me-too sites. They don't solve a business need, the owner has no particular passion for the subject and they are purely trying to capitalise on search engine traffic and ad revenue.

    That just doesn't cut it.

As a regional editor I get off lightly. The people who submit are local businesses wanting to get their website listed. Real examples of "bricks and clicks" - I can phone them up if I want to, in some cases I've been a customer.

The spam I see tends to be dupe listings and the occasional overseas company hoping to increase their exposure.

Some of the best sites I've found are ugly as sin, but have been maintained with such energy that you can't help but be impressed.

Lucky its New Zealand. And your a PRO and you can take that to the Bank. :p

There are still business out there that have no intent and never even bothered to submit. They don't even have the experience. They just created the site as "ugly as sin" and most of these can't be listed. So I was asking a model broken down in explanation so the ignorant webmasters like me can fully understand what DMOZ editors are really looking for.

If I do that Fortune 500 would surely want to sell salami publicly.

Who are you calling an Australian?

    Here's my rules
    1. You have passion for your subject matter and you know what you are talking about
    2. It is aligned with a real world business or an actual product (but not necessarily online sales)
    3. Your contact details are available on the page, there might even be a photo of your building, or of the sales team etc. It's not all glossy people from stock photo libraries
    4. Your site is updated atleast annually
    5. Your site has more than one page - it's not just an online business card
    6. Advertising such as google ads is discrete and appropriate, especially on the home page.
    7. No broken links, no login forms, no crazy redirects

See the tips from this beautiful New Zealander. If editors are just like you and not some META speaking, few words commenting, unreasonable blah blah blah, it would help a lot. Right martty ?
